David Langeliers, one of the folks from THQ, has an article on IGN describing all the varieties of German infantry units you'll see in Company of Heroes.

Adequately trained soldiers with little or no combat experience, the Volksgrenadiers were formed out of anything the Axis could get its hands on; boys, elderly men and even those that were previously rejected as physically unfit for service. In addition to their standard issue rifles, Volksgrenadiers are given MP40 Sub Machine guns that provide short range firepower and the Panzerfaust, a single-shot disposable rocket launcher capable of penetrating the armor of enemy tanks and vehicles, and damaging light structures. Volksgrenadiers along with all Axis Infantry squads, carry a medical kit for healing the wounded on the battlefield.

Nothing says "WWII RTS excitement" like young boys and old men.

Read: Company of Heroes Axis Infantry Article

Also: Axis Infantry Video

Spotted @ IGN

I hate to nitpick, but weren't those units technically called Volkssturm?

Also, the selection seems limited ( no infantry, no fallschirmjägers), and it doesn't make sense for every man in a squad to carry a heavy weapon (if I'm reading the article correctly, grenadiers have a rifle, a LMG and a rocket launcher).

    They were called both.
Grenadiers ARE infantry. That bit about the panzershrek is drivel, though, but what can you do.
Levski, did you play Dawn of War? Each squad had people in that squad that had the heavy weapon. This is the same company and they're using the same mechanic.

My own problem with the article:
What? People go entrenched to AVOID mortar damage. That doesn't make any sense. Mortars are best against people in the open.

volksgrenadier = title thought up by Hitler to make old men and children think they were part of a 'special' unit. It was a meaningless honorific.

Yeah, but only in mechanized/panzer divisions, and they were rarer and better equipped. I was talking about the lack of regular infantry.

Article made it sound like every guy in the squad came with the heavy weapons by default. DoW only had a few per squad.
