In order to do a proper poll on the best Western (non-anime) blobbers (as discussed in this thread), we need a list of all Western blobbers ever made. From what I've seen, it doesn't look like such a definitive list has ever been created.

I searched through the lists and suggestions from a couple previous blobber polls to get started:

https://rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/favorite-blobbers-dungeon-crawlers-poll.123516/
https://rpgcodex.net/forums/index.p...n-blobbers-after-2000-that-you-played.114993/

Crystals of Arborea - real time grid exploration (like Ishar), separate turn-based combat screen (chessboard-like)
Demise - RTwP
Gods - real time exploration, separate turn-based combat (like in 3D jRPGs)
Star Crawlers - turn-based grid exploration with a few real time elements, separate turn-based combat (like in jRPGs)
Stranger of Sword City - turn-based grid exploration, separate turn-based combat (like in jRPGs)

The combat phase alone does not a blobber make

Both games have blob movement though...what else do you need man!

If you say “puzzles” I’ll shoot you in the dick.

If you see that as blob movement, then basically every jRPG has blob movement and a lot of older western CRPGs where you only see one character

I discount the Realms of Arkania trilogy and the Goldbox games as blobber for that very reason, right movement in exploration but wrong combat, for Wasteland and Xulima it's the reverse

That’s the definition of blob movement though...

Goldbox Games and RoA games had tactical combat where positioning mattered. It’s easily discounted for that reason. LoX and Wasteland both are Western Crpgs with blob combat AND blob movement. As the 3D M&Ms showed, you don’t need grid based movement to be a blobber. Which means LoX mire than qualifies.

In blobbers you don't see yourself for you are one with the blob.

You could try building your argument around Albion also being on the list and, outside of two long FPP dungeons and a bit of town wandering, it being primarily a top-down RPG (with all party members being visible in those sequences) with chessboard combat.

It seems to be a similar question as whether action games with RPG-elements should have been included in the Top 100 RPG poll.

Do we just keep "pure blobbers" or include "partly blobbers" as well?

You could make an extra category for pseudoblobbers as well, but it'll probably end up bloating the list with games that are only marginally related and bringing an endless amount of whining. Better be efficient, draw a clear line, and put everything that doesn't fit the required criteria outside.

Wasteland and Xulima do kind of qualify though, since both combat and movement are in a blob (even though the latter is not in 1st person).

Goldbox and Realms of Arkania should probably not qualify since the combat is completely non-blobber.

Wasteland is definitely a blobber.
Lords of Xulima is a pseudoblobber, since character positioning DOES matter a great deal. Far more than a simple “back rows can’t melee” like you might find in the early Bard’s Tale or whatever.

Wasteland has party splitting, can you have a blobber with party splitting?
When I think blobber I think first person movement, I can see why that might not be a requirement but if it has non first person movement AND party splitting? Individual PCs can run away from combat without the rest of the group leaving, parties can be selected on the main menu and travel independently, Don't think it's a blobber.

Granted it's not a terribly useful feature of the game but it is there.

I suggest including only "pure blobbers" (1PP, step based grid movement, abstract combat), and not games like Dark Heart of Uukrul and the GB games.

And Evil's Doom is real time.

Also add Silvern Castle (TB, Apple only) to the list.

Demise is actually RTwP, not pure real time, maybe you can mark that.
there's also "Dungeon of the Dragon Knight", a Grimrock-clone.
The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians is RTwP
The Legend of Candlewind: Nights and Candles, Thunderscape and Gates of Skeldal are turn based.

Thunderscape had Wizardry-like combat and thus TB.
Yendorian Tales is Ultima clone, not a blobber, Yendorian Tales 2 and 3 are M&M3-5 clones and thus are blobbers.
