Hmm it looks like the venerable Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop is officially licensed for D&D 5E now: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/buyFG/DungeonsAndDragons.html
I've heard good things about Fantasy Grounds but the DLC-style pricing scheme has always put me off a bit. No wonder WotC / Hasbro decided to pair with them. :) Well at least they are working with a competent software developer now.

However, April 2015 brings us a different picture: it seems like D&D 5th Edition has surged into first place in terms of games played (but not in terms of number of players, a title curiously held by D&D 3.5).

Interestingly, the top 4 spots are all one flavour of D&D or another (including Pathfinder, of course). This matches ICv2's latest hobby game retailer surveys which have D&D regaining the top spot after several years. Paizo's Erik Mona does note, however, that the "post-5th Edition paradigm" has not significantly harmed Pathfinder's sales.

So I'm currently DMing an introductory PnP game for teens using Numenera rules. A couple of the kids are interested in playing a game with a bit more mechanical complexity, but they blanched when I brought in my PF books for them to take a look at, and I'm legally prohibited from suggesting or giving them books featuring 'mature' content (so, for example WoD is right out, and I think I could technically even get in trouble for having shown them 3e books due to book of vile darkness being in the same product line. Fucking Kwa public schools. ).
A few of them have become very interested in 5e, but I have no information to give them (mostly because WotC's "IT'S EVERYTHING EVERYONE HAS EVER LOVED ABOUT PNP!" marketing tack has led me to suspect that they have no clue what distinguishes it from prior editions).
How does 5e compare to prior editions in regards to mechanical complexity?
Is the combat enjoyable/bloat-free enough to avoid the use of miniatures?

And clearly Spelljammer is the best DnD setting that's ever been. My core gaming group that's lasted 2 decades still occasionally runs games in/finds their party thrown across dimensional rifts into Spelljammer because we all agree it's the most balls-to-the-wall fun of any DnD setting.

I know, man. I hemmed and hawed about including that particular piece of the equation, but ultimately did so only because it does affect the material I can give or recommend them.
And... at the risk of being slightly unprofessional: Yes, it turns out that most of the teens who sign up for an extra-curricular intro to PnP "workshop" are awkward fucking weirdos/trannies/furries. SOME of them are also, however, very intelligent, thoughtful, and creative people who live in a shitty world, and value the temporary escape that PnP brings.

And hopefully an adolescence sitting around playing PnP will make them more :obviously: adults than their peers.

    Oh god, please have stories

And a serious answer to your question: 5e is a lot simpler than third edition, but isn't abjectly terrible. It's probably a good game for beginners.

It's far from terrible, come on! It is simpler than third edition and has a good basic D&D feel.

Hamunaptra is allegedly not bad, but it is just a d20 sourcebook, not a full-blown system. There is also the venerable Valley of the Pharaohs from Palladium Books, which is good for historical reference.
