Digital Battle is in mourning over the near death of old school RTS games.

Naturally, not everyone has that much time to spend on a single mission, but it’s that exact challenge that made it so rewarding — multitasking between several bases on the map, deciding whether to spend your resources on research or build new units, try and anticipate where the enemy will strike and place your defenses there and so on. It required sheer gamer intelligence to pull it off. Today? Take Dawn Of War 2 for instance: you get a handful of units and go hunting across the map. Simple, to the point, but certainly not as rewarding. You might as well play a squad based FPS game instead.

Not sure that pumping up your APM really counts for "sheer gamer intelligence".

Spotted @ Blues News

DoW 2 wont even let you save during a mission, how about that for a PC only game?

Anywayz, this smaller scale approach and RPGness in these "new" RTS games didnt really help the genre. Things were much better when Blitzkrieg,Sudden Strike and Codename: Panzers were cool, they moved the genre forward, made it a bit more tactical on larger scale.
The new shit just bores the hell out of me.

Frankly, removing the base building was the best thing that could happen to DoW.
If they would only add "realistic" damage and weapon accuracy, then it would be a great Wh40k RT wargame.

Slapping the likes of DoW II, CoH, C&C4 and SupCom 2 together and calling them all non-traditional doesn't really help here, what a poor analysis of the current RTS market.

I'd even say we're almost back at the level of 2007: totally awesome so far. That's even without StarCraft II. The only thing missing is a non-fantasy medieval game, à la AoE II.

DoW 2 isn't an RTS, it's squad based diablo.

DoW 2 Multiplayer (the only thing you should care about in RTS) is unconventional, but RTS through and through.
