Diablo 2 filled with bots, spammers and obnoxious a-holes

Something's wrong with me, I started playing again 2 weeks ago, I have several level 80+ builds already.

I'm definitely in a declinatory phase, however I do love the music, visuals, phat lewt and hack n slay of this game. Its addictive as crack.

Anyone else playing Diablo 2 despite the awfulness of everything?

EDIT - ^ Wow, I was so humble and so friendly back then. Good to see nothing's changed in 2018.

 

I have been playing it off and on lately, but in single player with all of the ladder shit unlocked.

 

Try Torchlight 2? Or, for a buck, you can get Sacred 2 in the current Humble Bundle.

 

Game might be worth a run through on solo if you are really bored but I don't think the online game offers much for increasing your enjoyment.

Diablo 2 online is basically a rush to bosses and grinding exp then spamming left click to get loot to sell before others can get it.. no honor amongst thieves in diablo 2

Unless you play with friends.. unique armor you can get from the ladder is "uber" i guess but it's not like the game is super difficult to begin with. Well unless you make it to Uber Diablo.. but even then.. why would you grind through the story that many times.. not worth it.

 

I did SP for a while, too. I used GoMule and took a few builds through Hell.

After that I played Median XL with PlugY, I made three level 120s, each of which soloed /players8 Destruction. Awesome mod.

Online is much easier to level, though. I can level to 75 in only a few sessions. In SP you can't leech XP by doing Trist, Tomb and Baal runs.

 

Here's what I noticed since returning to the game:

>spam can cover the screen in public games, both global and PM spam. Mostly they're selling runes. Make private games with friends to avoid most of it.

>Bots rule the roost in Chaos and Baalruns, they are incredibly powerful and efficient. Great to leech XP from, I leeched from one for like 8 hours straight, I lost count of how many runs, the thing did not miss a beat (but don't expect to get any valuable loot).

>Normal channels are filled with noobs and beggars, or clan rushes (Trist, Tomb etc). Nightmare only seems to have Baalruns cuz most people just get rushed through NM and into Hell. Publicly, Hell is the sharpened point of the game and seems to be exclusively elite Chaos and Baalruns and trade and PvP channels. In 2 weeks of solid play I have never found a single "Act 1 lets go!" game in Hell. Just need to get lucky and find a rush so you can start harvesting top-tier items in Chaos/Baal to make runewords out of so that you can inturn start soloing Hell yourself or at least contributing to runs (and then rush other people and magic find).

This all sounds awful, I know. But I'm having fun. Some of the low level PvP is entertaining and even if you're not rich from buying the good gear for real money or trading on forums you can still deck out a low level twink and kick some ass in (rare) walks or rushes.

 

The only reason to even consider playing D2.

D1 is much better game.

 

D2 is broken. Animations on my computer look like everyone's glitching on meth. The timing between frames is shorter than it used to be. Since this happens in multiplayer too, I suspect Blizzard did this on purpose, to make D3 more appealing.

I enjoyed diablo 1.. I don't even remember if it had multiplayer when it was released, my friends and I would take turns seeing how far we could get on his shitty computer. I do know they eventually released a version on playstation 1 that you could play co-op with people and that was pretty cool at the time.

Not sure I'd say D1 to D2 was broken though. D2 did have a much faster gear progression but it also had more levels and shit so I guess it depends on how you like your difficulty to play out.

 

D1 has an absolutely fantastic atmosphere, and I can forgive it for being an action-y RPG-lite rogue clone, but D2 has Blizzard-stink all over it. Condor was ruined before they were even a success.

A bit of the universe ordaining my fate also, I was digging through my old CD cases looking for a *Not To Be Mentioned* game disc and diablo 1 cd fell out randomly and I tossed it in the corner. Guess I can go recover it now and try to get this mod.

 

In pure gameplay terms (ignoring atmosphere and such)

Modded D2 (Median XL) > Vanilla D1

Modded D1 (The Hell) > Modded D2

With atmosphere in the equation (a huge personal bias), I agree that D1 is better in every way - modded or not.

 

Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 appeal to two completely different crowds. Diablo 1 is an action roguelike, Diablo 2 is a grinding simulator, and virtually every game of this style mimics D2 grinding simulator, not D1.

Frankly, I'm pretty suspect of anyone who thinks D2 is better than D1. The only way it's fun is with friends, and even the shittiest of games can be fun with friends.

 

Both D1 and D2 eventually turn to grinding simulators in multiplayer, except for rare "challenge runs" in D1 (unlike D2, you don't get to loot the end boss of a difficulty level).

 

Refresh my memory: does Diablo 2 have persistent maps if you play single player?

I never played much of either game online, but I can't remember if D2 saves your game state exactly like D1 does. I know it doesn't if you play on battle.net.

 

Maps stay the same. Enemies respawn, of course.

 

No, the maps are generated anew as well once you restart.

 

Glad to know things haven't changed in 8 years, since I last played it.

 

Only interesting way to play D2 is to start new account and go hardcore as you able, no mules to back you up.

 

In single player if you ''explored'' maps they would stay like that(monsters respawn) unless you changed difficulty. So you can do things like reseting your map until you get this perfect spot for Mef runs(or Ball) and then just rerun it until fatletwz drop.

 

D2 doesn't save full game state.

Maps, IIRC, are semi-persistent - geometry will stay the same as long as you don't host or join another game using the same character, otherwise they get reset.

Enemies, including bosses and quest targets respawn like in some shitty MMO.
Your character also auto-resurrects unless you're playing hardcore.

 

I might be confused but figured I'd ask here before scouring their forums..

Is "The Hell" a submod for "Hellfire" or is it a stand alone mod?
