Diablo 1, auto attack with a fighter the entire game. Diablo 2, use all different kinds of attacks based on situation. Gee, no wonder Codex loves dickblow 1. In d1 I could get a full set of the best gear in 2 hours on a mage character, while in d2 it can take a long time for my mages. I think that is mainly because the d1 mage mass murders everything instantly, unlike in d2. I must admit that the quest system was much better in d1, but the rewards should be given from npcs in town instead of loot drops from bosses. The fun in d2 is going through all of the dungeons/caves to fight random combinations of bosses, and quite often they are more difficult than any end chapter boss.

Both d1 and d2 have shit atmosphere. For some reason I find Torchlight better when it comes to art direction and settings.

Shitty story detracts from the atmosphere in a game. Who cares about the visual eye candy of a game if there is no depth to it.

Not saying diablo 1 / 2 had the bestest stories ever, but Torchlight?

The point of D1 isn't to get the "best gear" - it's a roguelike and when played in single player, the point isn't to grind for items over and over. You make do with what you find/buy and that's it. Yeah, you can start over and regrind everything, but that's rarely necessary. If you're playing it as a grinding game like D2 you're doing something wrong.

Yes, D1 is less complex, but saying D2 is more complex doesn't mean much. D2 = auto attack with your main skill the entire game rather than "auto attack with fighter" like Gurkog says about D1.

Nothing wrong with you, Diablo 2 was Blizzard at their best. And despite all the disrespect they get here Blizzard had a pretty great run from the early 90s to the 2nd WoW expansion or so.

If you haven't already, you really should check out the Median XL mod. It's the single finest mod of any cRPG I have ever seen. No bots or spammers in single-player mode.

You must have missed my post where I said I ran three builds through MXL all the way to level 120 Destruction. I also played online for a while (The Sin War), and I agree, MXL blows everything away. Everything.

    I mean Diablo 1, Torchlight 2? lol

Running through the D1 mod now, seems decent enough so far.. one thing to note is you aren't allowed to zone out if there are any monsters attacking you... even if they are half way across the zone... I wonder what D2 would have been like if you couldn't just town portal any time you got in trouble.

I think Diablo 1 is more enjoyable in the moment, because of the atmosphere and music, while some parts of Diablo 2 are just a tedious grind between waypoint relief (granted you haven't figure out every possible map layout, which I still haven't). It's not a long game, but it could stand to be smaller.

Never liked Diablo 2, the world is made of big empty lifeless fields with clumps of monsters scattered here and there. Which might be fitting for the setting, but it was a chore to play. The whole "Let's run [boss] again, maybe he'll drop something cool this time!" gameplay doesn't interest me one bit, either. Fuck Minecraft, this is the gameplay of a real autism simulator. The "hardcore mode" probably makes it interesting, but iirc you have to unlock it by finishing the game first and I couldn't be arsed playing through it once.

Then again, I never tried it online. Might be cool with a bunch of players on the same screen, but that goes for pretty much any game.

Probably a hipster who can't get past the bad graphics.. my assumption at least. (Everybody knows better graphics = better game)

Been playing that "The Hell" mod for diablo 1.. it really makes diablo 1 a lot more fun. They rebalanced the game extremely well.

I think you can't zone if you have encountered a unique monster.. you have to slay it first before you are allowed to zone out / town portal / etc

Beating King Leoric's Tomb made me feel like a champ on normal difficulty. I can't wait to see what's in store on hard.

Protip.. You're going to need multiple sets of armor or a lot of Repair Potions

Bad by today's standards lol, I'm fine with them though.. heck I'm even trying out some games created before I was born right now >_>

There's like some weird correlation between how bad a games graphics are and how much emphasis they put on it's story.

You might as well check out Path of Exile. It scratches the same itch. It's pretty much considered the sequel to Diablo 2 these days.

This thread made me reinstall Diablo III, just to see how it has changed since last year.

I immediately was reminded why I quit in the first place. The points most sticking out are:

    1) Shallow, forgettable world. There's no sensation, threat or any feeling when you work through a dungeon. Even in Hell difficulty it's just boring.
    2) Lack of scale and volume. The world is small and shitty and made for consoles.
    2) Dumbed down console UI. Everything's made too comfortable. No redundacy to make the player feel uncomfortable/stressed. Diablo without stress is no Diablo. There's no emotion when playing D3.
    3) Presentation. Shitty bright graphics and unremarkable soundtrack.
    4) This:

Also tried Path of Exile, but it's lacking diversity and production values. Fuck Torchlight 2 because shitty colorful graphics.

So is this Median XL mod for Diablo 2 recommendable?

It turns an empty shallow world with boring mechanics into an even emptier, shallower world (those new locations and borrowed monster sprites from IE games... whats up with fighting ToB Fire Giants in Act 1) with cool, interesting mechanics. Though I don't see the point in a soul-less, single-player grinding simulator - YMMV.

Yea, awesome mod. Ultimatum, ftw (MXL on steroids). I have 3 level 120 builds and have just started a fourth. The game is much faster, there are many more enemies, many more things happening on-screen at once and much more damage is dished out and taken per sec to keep you awake.

In another topic I said MXL Bloodmoor is the equiv of D2 Chaos Sanctuary, and that's not exaggerating all that much.

MXL also addresses the visuals of D2, Ultimatum goes all out and gives it a much darker, gothicky almost original D1 presentation.

Don't forget to install PlugY, it makes your stash bigger and adds more stat screens for things like IAS and MF. You need to have D2 patched to 1.13c for PlugY.

I always found singleplayer D2 dreadfully boring, some time ago I attempted to replay it with that Median mod and stuff but still couldn't get past the first act. I don't know what makes it so unbearable, I spent a lot of time playing D2 online and singleplayer D1 is way more "fun".

That doesn't bode well, actually as it exacerbates the "awesome hero cuts path through giant horde of evil mooks while being awesome" aspect and on high level you often failed to see the screen through all the flames and lightning bolts in vanilla D2.

Median XL has a pretty cool crafting/loot system, the challenges are a cool idea, and stuff like that, but the design of the game itself is a little sketchy. The guy just went to the limits of what you can do with D2 modding, which means a bunch of weird stolen sprites and a shit ton of rainbow colors and whatnot. It takes things to the opposite spectrum of Diablo 1 in terms of pace and atmosphere. I mean, look at this shit:

I always preferred Eastern Sun over MXL. The latter's just too damn gaudy, as the above screenies show.

dannyfx1 - I was talking about the icons introduced in that Median mod. ;) I am actually fine with the normal DII UI.
