The illumination bothers me.

Yea, it really is overly dark in general. There are rooms with a roof light, which is on, which is clearly meant to light up the entire area, but the room is still extremely dim.
I would guess it's partially an effort to add to the atmosphere and partly to cover some of the rough graphical edges. Might grab it at some point though since it only £4 on Steam.
