Yes and no. Yes, in the sense that they are not long and are not much of the gameplay really.

No, in the sense that there's always some nice puzzle in them and the way of solving that puzzle depends on your spell selection - there are multiple ways of completing a dungeon though it may prove impossible if you fail to obtain proper spells (in this Teleport other was the answer... Push Object from Red magic would have worked here as well, there's a spell from another magic that let's you see the layout of entire dungeon so you can Teleport yourself around it).

Other dungeons have other, more complex challenges though nothing very difficult, sadly. It's enough not to think in typical RPG - magic is my artilery - way about your spells. Bear in mind - there are "better" ways of completing a dungeon - ones that will grant you extra Merits.

Also, Mana is vital - the more mana you have the more spells you can cast. Lack of mana could be problematic. You run dry - you are screwed. There are spells that let you recover mana in some way e.g. convert your HP into MP, or drain it from some entity, but it's a long way from here.

I liked dungeons because they let me play a mage witch I always wanted to - one that shift layouts of dungeon at will, communicates with spirits for answers, dispels enchantments from ancient artifacts etc as opposed to being a mobile artillery platform. I wish there was more matter to it though. :(

Study moar, your MP is too low at the moment, so you should save the little money you have.

Yeah, I saw stoneshape in the trailer let you make a bridge out of the rubble as well. I imagine green magic might have some sort of run fast/jump high spell given whatshisname wanted to use it in the soccer match. The idea is fine but one puzzle per dungeon is a huge letdown. Should've upped the mana points and crammed 5-6 puzzles in per dungeon at least.

Hmmm, wonder how hard it'd be to mod the spell system in Legend of Grimrock once the level editor is out... I noticed there was a script editor built into it in the preview video. What do you think, Crooked Bee? Drop the combat in LoG entirely, add a bunch of new spells, go all-puzzle. :P

That'd be great, and I do plan on tinkering with the editor once it comes out, maybe trying to recreate a couple of classic puzzle dungeons from Wiz4 or Uukrul with it. Unfortunately, though, I lack the time and talent required to make something really good, but perhaps someone else will. (I'd kill for a non-linear Chaos Strikes Back-like expansion for Grimrock, for one.)

I think it would be a little bit too much for one person to accomplish in a mod. You'd have to come up with multiple non-linear and not immediately obvious solutions to puzzles, you'd have tinker the spell-learning system, and if the mod allowed for multiple mages in the party find a way to balance out skills in all paths of magic... bonus points for some background and other challenges so that the mod doesn't turn into poor man's Minecraft. The idea is cool, though.

I guess I should work more on my brain power. I head to the library, Minnie's there, so I joined her.

And it's time for my Sunday...

    'RK! There you are!'

    [IMG] Huh?

Minnie runs up to me in the hall.

    [IMG] The what?
[IMG] On Halloween. It's a ceremony - I can find you a book about it -
[IMG] That's ...fine. What do you need me for?
[IMG] Each class contributes to a part of the setup. We're doing incense. I've already picked some out, but I need you to sign to authorize the funds.

I don't know. I'm not even sure what the heck are we doing, it's strange for the President to make a decision without the Treasurer even attending any meeting at all.

    [IMG] That's all?
[IMG] Everything else is taken care of! I've got the papers here, so if you can just sign...

    Not...so..fast.

I feel like I'm the fifth wheel all the sudden. Don't tell me I'm supposed to green light whatever she proposes while I'm stuck with my Saturday shitty routine. I want to know what this is about. I might get in trouble if I just blindly authorize funds release.

[IMG] Hey Prez, shouldn't I read through those first? What sort of ceremony is it? Mind you, I don't want to read a whole book about it, but I do want to know what I'm signing.
[IMG] Right, right. It's for the Dark Dance. That's a ritual where we invite the Jogao - the Little People to cross the threshold from the Otherworld and dance with us.
    [IMG] Faeries?
[IMG] Yes, it's held in the dark so that people can't see the spirits.
[IMG] 'So that people can't see?' What do you mean?
[IMG] That was originally meant for people who aren't witches, so they wouldn't get upset or try to catch them, but it's still considered rude to stare.
[IMG] How do you actually dance in the dark without everyone bumping into each other?
[IMG] Well, of course, everyone moves very slowly and carefully.

I give up, I might as well just figure it out when I get there. These witch rituals baffle me.

[IMG] It's not like a nightclub, you know. This is an important way of showing respect to the local spirits.
    [IMG] I see.
[IMG] Most magical families hold their own small ceremonies on Halloween, but this is a big one. It will go on all night. If you last until morning you're supposed to receive a blessing.

As long we don't do it with drums and animal masks, I'm fine with it.

[IMG] All night as in no sleep, huh?
[IMG] Well, yes. But classes are canceled the next day. Anyway, I'm ordering pine incense. It's a healing scent and it's appropriate for the area.

We talk a bit more about the amounts and the costs, but she seem to have it all worked out. She knows a lot more about these things than I do. Guess I'll get to see something new this week.

I finish reviewing my diary before heading to bed. Time to restart the grind.

[IMG] A dance? But I don't have anything to wear! And I haven't asked anyone...
[IMG] Not that kind of dance!
    [IMG] It's a ritual.
[IMG] Yeah, on Halloween nights, witches and wizards dance in the dark so the fairies can visit. It's a ceremonial thing. At home we only do it for a few minutes, but because there's so many of us here, they make it into a big event at school. It goes on all night.
    [IMG] I see.
[IMG] So it's not really a romantic-type of dance, but I guess you could bring a date if you wanted to.
[IMG] So will you be going with Jacob?
    [IMG] Wha?
    [IMG] You like Jacob?
[IMG] No! Where did you get that idea?
[IMG] Well, he's always picking on you...
[IMG] So is Donald. That just means he's a jerk.

    She got me there.

    [IMG] Sorry.
    [IMG] Whatever.

It's time for classes this week. Oh, Friday's class is cancelled due to the Dark Dance. So yeah, I just have to plan for the 4 days. Wonder if I should skip today's classes to catch a break?

Red x2 and Green x2. We'll rest as soon as the party stops. By the way, if you're given the option, try to acquire at least one cold iron weapon (or a charm). Just to be sure :M
