35 - My Questions, His Answers

Ellen's obviously unhappy, but maybe she'll feel better if we talk about something else.

[IMG] I don't like any boys.

    ...this could get interesting.

    [IMG] Any girls, then?
[IMG] No, I don't like anybody that way.
    [IMG] Why not?
[IMG] Maybe I have high standards?
[IMG] There must be somebody that sparkles a little for you. Maybe you just don't realize it!
[IMG] That makes no sense at all.
[IMG] I bet the person you really like is...

Meh, they're all horrible choices. Let's go with that senior she met during Initiation.

    [IMG] Balthasar?
[IMG] Nooooo! Okay, there's a serious rule. Whoever I eventually like, they have to be not afraid of sunlight.
    [IMG] All right. What else?
[IMG] Hmm... No nerds. Sorry, Ellen.

Ouch. Iceburn. At least I'm safe! Haha.

[IMG] Well, I didn't want to go out with you anyway!

Looks like Ellen has recovered nicely, just as planned.

    [IMG] Tall? Short?
    [IMG] Why would that matter?
    [IMG] Dancing?
    [IMG] Slow dancing is boring.
[IMG] Okay, so you want someone more active.
[IMG] How about the glittery, pretty type?
[IMG] Definitely no boys who are in love with themselves!

We go on like that for a while, not reaching any real conclusion, but at least keeping the focus off Ellen. Mission accomplished.

On Saturday morning, I get up terribly early and deliver the mail and the allowances. And then I have to serve my detention. When I arrive at the room for detention, it seems that the professor hasn't even bothered to turn up. Well, I'm not alone though. Donald's here, scowling down at a notebook in front of him. He doesn't pay any attention to my entrance.

What is up with this kid? Does he break the rule every week or something?

I look at the table and found a thick blue library book on the table, with "Folklore and Mythology Compilation" on the cover in silver lettering. Next to it, a piece of paper headlined with my name in Prof. Grabiner's handwriting.

According to this note, I'm supposed to read a list of selected fairy tales and identify the most common failing of the human heroes. I hate reading. I flip through the book quickly. Eithne the Bride. Doesn't ring a bell. Beauty and the Beast, umm I guess don't judge by appearance? The Sea Nymph? East of the Sun and West of the Moon, The Gifts of the Mountain Spirits....

Geez. Are all these stories true, or just the ones he's picked out, or none? I've heard only one of this since I was little, but they never mentioned "Jogao" or dances like the one we had. Oh well, I'd better get to work. I sit across from Donald. Hey, maybe he'll make decent company.

    [IMG] Hey, you noticed.
    [IMG] Noticed what?
    [IMG] That I'm here.

    Huh? Slow day or something?

[IMG] Well... That's sort of obvious, isn't it?
    [IMG] You'd think.
    [IMG] Beg your pardon?

He leans back in his chair and smiles.

    [IMG] Got any siblings?
    [IMG] Err. No.
    [IMG] Want 'em?
    [IMG] What? You offering?
    [IMG] Yes. Take them. Please!

He shrugs. Does he really hate his siblings that much? I don't really quite get it.

[IMG] I know you and Virginia don't get along. But what about William? You're brothers. You must have a lot to share.
[IMG] Ha. You know what you asked me earlier? William never asks.
[IMG] Which thing I asked you earlier?

He doesn't answer. The silent moment stretches. In the distance, I hear footsteps echoing down the hall.

[IMG] Hey. RK? Do me a favor?
    [IMG] Okay...

Guess I owe him one for the merit points with Prof. Potsdam.

[IMG] Ask William what he thinks of me.

And with that, he turns his head back to his works, just before the door opens.

By the end of the afternoon, I've finished taking notes on the fairies in these stories. They're all completely different. One will give you gold if you're polite and give you a hunchback if you're not, but another will only give treasures to people who insult him.

One hero defeated an army of elves just by digging a hole in a hill and sprinkling it with salt, but in a different story a king lost his whole country and was cursed for a hundred years for looking at a fairy woman naked. I have no idea what I'm supposed to learn from this, except maybe fucking with fairies is a bad idea?

Meh, whatever. It was boring work, but it's over now. Gained 10 stress. Time to head back to the dorms.

    Later...

I'm walking along minding my own business when suddenly I felt a gentle touch on the back of my head. I turn around, but there's no one nearby. Then I notice something white drifting to the floor. Paper?

He picks up the paper airplane and winks at me.

[IMG] It was supposed to go over your head.
    [IMG] No problem.

Now that I've run into him, I have a chance to ask him something, if I want...

Well, I owe Donald a favor. I think whatever happened between him and Ellen is none of my business anyway.

[IMG] Hey, William. This is sort of a silly question. Do you and Donald get along?
    [IMG] Huh? Sure. Why?
[IMG] Well, Virginia talks about you all the time. She really looks up to you, and she relies on you to know how things work. Is it like that with you and Donald? Or is there some kind of secret masculine bonding thing?

I cringed at the last part. Masculine bonding thing? The hell was I saying?

[IMG] Well, I can't tell you about our male secrets. No, really, Donald's - Donald's his own guy. He'd rather solve his problems himself.
[IMG] Like his problems with his sister?
[IMG] I don't get involved in that.
[IMG] You mean you're not on Virginia's side?
[IMG] There's no point in taking sides. If she's told you that she's always the innocent one, don't believe her. They're each as bad as the other.

    Interesting.

[IMG] But you seem to like Virginia better.
[IMG] ... What is she up to this time?
    [IMG] Huh? Nothing!
[IMG] RK, just tell Virginia that I love her, but I can't do her homework for her.

    That's not what I asked!

[IMG] Look, William. I'm not here to talk about Virginia, I want to talk to you about Donald!
    [IMG] What?

Do I really have to spell it out for this guy?

    Finally, he gets it.

[IMG] Well, I can't tell you much about that. I've only been at home with them for the summer these past few years. Donald's never told me about any special girls.

    Wait-what?

    [IMG] You-

    - hang on a sec, if he thinks I've got a crush on Donald, that might be a good reason for him to give me an honest opinion.

[IMG] ... so,um, what do you think of Donald, really?
[IMG] He's not a bad kid. He's just got too much energy, and that's what gets him into trouble. It happens with a lot of Wolves. If he's more willing to work hard on anything but pranks, he could go a long way.
    [IMG] I see.
[IMG] A steady girlfriend would probably be good for him. I certainly wouldn't complain about seeing you two together.

    Enough with the assumptions!

    [IMG] Errr.
[IMG] But I'm not the one you have to ask, am I?

    He ruffles my hair.

[IMG] Don't worry, I won't tell him you said anything. Good luck!

And then he's gone. Now I'm really worried.

Let him think what he wants. I've got my own stuff to take care of. Before I know it, the weekend's gone. Damn detention tired me out.

On Monday morning, I find a folded note with my name on it slipped under the door. It's from Prof. Jerkface, requesting that I meet him after class. "Requesting" - so I'm probably not in trouble. Yet. If I don't show up, that might change. Well, anyway. Let's plan this week's classes.

Negroid "enrichment" in RKs immediate future it seems.

We've kind of gotten sidetracked with all this dabbling shit. Let's resume learning high level spells so we can enslave nations with necromancy.

So, fairies are evil? Figures. I suggest we begin mass-producing cold iron weapons and start a war...

Seriously, what's with the black and blue mania? You will not get necromancy and world domination, it's not that kind of game. let's try to avoid being one trick ponies shall we?

It's not larping if you're basing your choices on something that's NOT in the game. It's just wishful thinking.

Besides if you wanted to go "necromancy", something that is not in the game, I'd expect you to pick the evil and jerk choices at every turn. Which you do NOT do.

And why do you choose to spoil us in this manner? I don't understand. Part of the fun is discovering dead end paths based on our choices. Whether it's good or bad ends, at least we know the developer provided us with decent hints that builds up to the failed conclusion - unlike other big time devs who simply gave us three buttons at the end to choose. I like this game. It's poor in some areas, but the choice and consequences is done right.

I respect developers who gives the player the 'freedom to fail.'

Not exactly necromancy, but not quite natural all the same. :D

Uh, I never played this game so I'm not spoiling anything. But considering the entire setting and what we saw up to now, I seriously doubt there will be any necromancy here. If you thought I was spoiling because I had already finished the game, I apologize because that's not the case

It seems a much too "cheerful" setting for it to have necromancy, let alone world domination. it's an otome game...
