I suppose that makes sense, but in that case risk/reward, too bad faggot

I refuse to let my commanders partake in any battles unless they are geared for it

Sup bats, you will need to try better. A lot better. Three battles this turn, they all went like this:

That's why I said during the initial expansion, when most nation have no horsies and those who do prefer usually to invest in more cost-efficient troops. I used decoy succesfully from turn one by telling them to hold and attack rear, if you set them to guard commander what Joined on the 4th of July happens...

Then obviously when your armies are less mono-dimensional and you can apply some strategy you're right, Decoy archers and wall them far away from your commander. Still in many of my test games those early decoys set to hold and attack are very efficient, I'm not an expert but I had a noticeable reduction in losses/afflictions and when your expansion group is 15-20 man strong those 1-2 dead make a difference...

pinging Grimwulf for great use of decoys in his excellent LP, opinions man? Please noobsplain me....

Er? IIRC, I just used standard 1-frontline-chaff-unit, set to "hold and attack" or just "attack". If you set them to "guard commander" and place commander somewhere behind, then that unit will fall back, while archers will still aim at him. Eventually he will return to commander (coz "guard commander" makes him stand as close to commander as possible), and archers will keep firing. It's effective, when used properly. But you should always keep in mind that sometimes unscripted archers do not fall for any decoy tricks. And during pbems players tend to actually script them into choosing different targets, not always "fire closest".

Of course against scripted archers it won't work, and we all love Dominions for those "sometimes" moments...
Still you more or less confirmed what I thought, thx!

Also remember that what's a standard tactic for you is novelty for others, I for example never tried using decoys before reading your LP so I had to go by trial and error to obtain similar results.

My "favorite" script gimmick is the one with barbarians. It's so stupid that I consider it cheating. ;)

    Please explain.

I lost some pikeneers against 'em to a miscalculation on turn 2 (too many barbarians, and the crossbows failed to kill enough, even if in the end they carried the day as usual) so I'd love to hear easy way to avoid the dreaded "Contact!" moment.

You will pretty much never lose a battle against a barb province again. Put one guy top all the way forward, either on Hold-Attack or preferably Hold-Fire. Put all the rest of your dudes, including commander, on the bottom and all the way back. Set to Hold-Attack(archers can hold-fire or fire-closest, doesn't matter). If you have your prophet, just set to do Bless-Courage-Smitex3, it will go easier.

Then watch the magic unfold. There's something in Barb commanders that they haven't fixed, where they will just charge your commanders. The Barbarian blob naturally Attacks closest. So a few rounds in and the blob is headed towards your sacrificial lamb, while the commanders are headed to your real army. Almost every time the Barb commanders will die way before the Barb blob kills your dude and turns around. Sometimes with a lucky smite/ranged attack, your lone dude still survives.

Barbarian commanders can master the hidden second tier of "undisciplined", "batshit crazy".

Holy shit, it works. Two sacrificial monkeys are better, as truly big blobs come in two groups.

My guess is that Barbarian Leaders still use the ancient "Target Commander" option, that exists only for Indies (and Bogus, I think).

    Thanks :salute:

I guess I'd be lying if I said the amount of betrayal on that turn didn't leave a sour taste in my mouth. I'm now technically at war with five people.

I thought it was you because you were the first one to send this.

EDIT: Nevermind, I can't read emails apparently.

My carefully orchestrated castle assault didn't go quite as planned. For one, I forgot to order my prophet to take part in it, so there was no one to bless my sacreds (well, until round 6 when some other bless-capable guys finally went off script).
