Prey is a good HL clone.

I found Prey to be much better and more interesting than Doom 3 using the same engine, despite the even shittier gun combat and that stupid post-death minigame. The whole intro to the game was pretty top notch and impressive too. I definitely had a 'Crysis' experience the first time witnessing that abduction with Blue Oyster Cult playing, then being trollied around that alien ship.

Prey was a game that at the time was pretty meh, but given what's poured out of the FPS genre's anus the last 5 years Prey suddenly seems like a fucking masterpiece.

Yes the intro. And the portal room where you can see your own back. And the mini asteroid with gravity. And the upside down gravity rooms (that have been copied again and again from Crysis to Dead Space to Inversion). And the level where you fly a spaceship out of the giant mothership.

Granted I was pretty naive when I played Prey. But those are some of my best gaming memories.

And I played Prey, Riddick and STALKER one after another. And six months later I played the original Crysis. That was a great year for me.

Recurring theme. I just finished Elite Force 2 some while ago, a game i didn't even deign a look at the time. It was a fucking masterpiece compared to modern shooters.

Describes Doom 3 fairly well too.

Yeah, but how many modern shooters have you guys played to come to this conclusion? Lyric Suite above is just going with his gut felling to say that modern shitters are shit. That's all well and good, but i want someone who played a considerable amount of modern FPS and came to this conclusion...

I've played pretty much every popamole singleplayer corridor shooter from post-2007 years (I'm a sucker for FPS). And they're all shit, in one way or another (well maybe Metro, Necrovision and Assault on Dark Athena were OKish but they were also extremely flawed).

And none of them came within ten light years from the level of awesomeness of Prey.

I played a good amount of shitty modern shooters until around 2008 or so I would guess. Lots of late Xbox and early Xbox 360 stuff (on PC of course). I even liked the first Modern Warfare game for what it was, a weird and linear cinematic game. Little did I know suddenly every shooter would copy it. I quickly bailed after that.

I still play and like the Far Cry and Crysis games though, they're pretty decent. I remember liking Raven's final few games, even if they weren't great.

Prey was miles better than Doom 3 and actually had some interesting and unique concepts and set pieces. I'm struggling to think of an FPS released since then that has been much more than a generic military shooter with scripted sequences. Maybe Singularity?

I liked Singularity too, actually think it was mentioned here not long ago. Nothing groundbreaking but it was pretty damn fun and worth a playthrough. Surprising given its developement. A shame about Raven though and getting in bed with Infinity Tard. They were always hit and miss but gave us some gems over the years. We'll probably never see anything of worth from them again. Long live Jedi Outcast.

Singularity was very meh. They did nothing interesting with Time Manipulation. Also the environment didn't feel Soviet enough.

And it felt like a ripoff of Timeshift.
