His motivation was pretty clear from the original: he was the guy who kicked out the orlesians and Cailan was bringing them back in.

Actually Cailan agreed not to bring in the Orlesian reinforcments.

For that battle.

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is reasonably well-written, not anywhere close to Planescape: Torment, but certainly miles ahead of games such as Alpha Protocol and Mask of the Betrayer.

You're precious.
BG 2 writing > MotB writing? Anomen? Aerie? Minsc & Boo?

Yeah, BG2 writing is just good enough for the setting, it's not actually good.

Not at all. Certain potential party members aside, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is still reasonably well-written, more so, I feel, than Mask of the Betrayer (which, in retrospect, really ought to be referred to as an expansion, not a game of its own). While the latter features arguably deeper and more interesting party members, most quests and NPCs in Mask of the Betrayer are uninteresting and unappealing, just like those in the original Neverwinter Nights 2 campaign.

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is not a perfect game, but in regards to dialogue and interaction, you would be hard pressed to find a better written computer role-playing game released after Planescape: Torment.

"You play the same character with the same companions between BG1 and BG2. "

Only half true.
