Health regeneration in a hentai game
The health regeneration is in the game because there are no health pickups anywhere in the game.
We did this because of two reasons;
1) Hunting for potions or etc. all over the map just isn't fun, in our opinion, and turns the game into a backtrack-fest for people who aren't skilled at platformers, meaning we'd either have to design the maps to be incredibly easy to accommodate those people, or we'd keep the maps at the difficulty they are and basically alienate a huge chunk of players. Keeping health regeneration on allows us to make difficult maps while keeping the pace of the game solid, as you regenerate health after not being hit for a few seconds, regardless of whether you're moving, attacking, or anything else.
2) The alternative way to regenerate health, through spells, would be ridiculously difficult to balance as if you give the player buffs to this spell, they could just spam them all day long and practically never die, or if you didn't give them buffs, the spell would be practically useless late game and we'd have the same "really hard to beat levels for most average players" problem.
Making enemies do anywhere from 50 to 10 HP per attack, while still keeping health regen in there, (The player's health for the entire game is 100 HP) allows us to be able to balance the game in a way that the difficulty can rise over the course of the game, while keeping things still fair (through good enemy placement) for players of all skill levels.
Finally, taking 30 HP damage or more within 5 seconds means you get stunned, which is where the sex animations come in; having health buffs/potions/etc. would pretty much negate any of the negative effects of taking that damage, meaning players could just faceroll through the game spamming heals or grabbing potions, etc.
We're basically trying to make a game that if you removed the porn from it, it would still play as a legitimate game, while simultaneously making it so the porn/hentai aspect is woven in the game's storyline/gameplay in a way that it doesn't just feel tacked on. Sounds contradictory, but I think we're doing decently at it so far
there's always room for improvement though, we're working on drastically changing the maps and enemy placement form the current public beta demo, as well as adding in boatloads more graphics/audio/backgrounds, a boss, more environmental traps/gimmicks and things, so on.
Damn, that post ended up being a lot longer than I intended, haha.
Sorry, there is no h-games discussion on rpgcodex beyond the occassional few posts from myself and a few other enlightened individuals. H-Game polls for the E3 thread are an annual codex tradition.
Gotcha, so I'm assuming I probably shouldn't discuss it then or?
