I still prefer to play Linley's Dungeon Crawl.

Nethack is the best dungeon grinder, ADOM is the best epic roguelike with a huge overworld, and Gearhead is the most unique and addicting in its very own way. The Crawl and derivatives just don't have the same appeal.

Colored ASCII is adequate for the vast majority of games, but due to having z levels or other complex features, some games are better served with tiles.

It hasn't had 23 years to mature. Hack (85) -> Nethack (87)

At one point Hack wasn't much more then Crawl was.

This kinda signposts itself as an ADOMlike with stuff like the puppy cave and the herbs, but it feels like Angband with the ego weapon and armor lottery and monsters designed to fuck you up the butt for not grinding the correct kit together.

At this point, Elona is just a hell of a lot of potential, but with little substance. I could see it developing into a great game in 3+ years or so.

This question doesn't make sense. Little girls as pets is one of the most X-TREME features found in RPGs. And some level scaling happens even in ADOM.

Bullshit. Only the first level in a single dungeon is like that (ie monster power scales to level)... it is there as a special challenge.

Bullshit. The "level scaling" in Adom is in some sence even worse than Oblivion as creatures become more powerful the more you kill its kind. In my level 50 mage's game (savescum beaten) rats currently have at least 187 HP, giant bats have 199, goblins have 216, while in comparision minotaurs have 167, cyclops have 227, ogres have a fucking 67.

Another annoying thing introduced in the new (yeah, right) version of ADOM (I haven't noticed it before) is that having high Speed means you'll be gaining a lot less experience.

This game is grind, if you like to see your numbers go up, this is it. Don't know what the complain about anime is about, don't notice portraits in this game, only numbers and letters.

Edit: OK, I lied. Latest beta build is from 08-May-2010. But still, dead game is dead.

Creator has abandoned it and gave out the code for others to continue. Game is mostly finished, has more content than 99% of games out there, with only balancing and tweaks for some of the features. It only has blackjack in the casino though.

Lots of pop culture references, best is that people can pregnant with chest bursting aliens and turn a town into a warzone, good thing the game supplies nukes. There is even a nuke a town quest like FO3.
Funfact: whoring yourself is a easy way to make lots of $$$, but you might catch STD. There are savegame editors if you want to skip some of the grind and rebalance the game.
