I just bought a Secret Service magazine from 1997. It has an info about Baldur's Gate being in development.
One thing that caught my eye:
"After the great success of Diablo and Final Fantasy 7 it became obvious that the era of role-playing-games in which action is observes from the eyes of the player (he meant player character) is slowly wandering off into oblivion.
The isometric view previously observed in Ultima series will find more and more imitators, like Diablo 2, recently reviewed Faery Tale Adventure and Baldur;s Gate where like in Diablo the authors announce great emphasis on graphical details"

Well, to be frank, isometric was the shit back then. Everyone played Diablo, so you could see why they'd think that.

I don't see why that author thinks first person games are precluded from 'great emphasis on graphical details'.

Actually, if you think about it, first/third person view is in fact less "accessible" than isometric or top down view. It's harder to control and harder for noobs to orient themselves in.

Isometric games are considered more 'hardcore' because along with the easier-to-manipulate view, the games usually have more complex gameplay elements that require it.
