Game News Eschalon: Book III Teaser Trailer Released, Greenlight Entry

You had me at "not a dumbed down RPG for the masses".

That said, the walk speed in Eschalon 1 is /painful/.

Very excited about this, I really enjoyed the first 2.

 

IIRC, next up was something in the Sci-Fi realm of doings---but this was last talked about such a long time back I can't recall if it was indeed party based or otherwise.

 

He was talking about doing a Sci-Fi blobber, but I don't know how serious he was.

 

I liked the Book I at first, but it got pretty samey after a few hours. Still the exploration, character system and item variety were pretty cool and I would gladly finish it given more free time. But, life being what it is, I moved on to other games, adding this one onto my "play later" list. Not anywhere near the top spot, though.

 

Eschalon was one of the shittiest, most boring games I've ever played. Literally. It's like they mixed roguelike combat without all the fun rogulike features (like randomness, item identification, sudden death) with normal crpg that's completely barebone (1 char, simple character system, fedex quests).

I played Book II first, then Book I and that worked fine for me. While Book 2 is a continuation, the story is disconnected enough that it didn't bother me.
If unsure, there are demos available that should give a good idea of what to expect from the games.

Personally I found them quite enjoyable (even if they are a bit on the simple/simplistic side) and will definitely buy Book 3.

The walk speed never really bothered me much, btw, not even in Book 1. There's a quick-travel system that works well enough to prevent the worst.

I think the series are OK, even with all those simplistic system, fetch quests, and boring combat.
But the slow walking animation is getting tedious after a few hours, thus my enjoyment diminishes greatly as a result.
I'll wait for the codex review then, if it's interesting enough maybe I'll try the game.

 

I liked the first one and I don't even really know why. All the criticism of it is valid. Whatever he decides to do after this one, I hope he beefs up combat in a new engine.

 

Agreed FrancoTAU. After beating both games twice, I still can't really explain why I love them to bits.

 

Hey, its open world with no level scaling, moderate challenge and decent exploration - I guess these are few reasons to like the game. Simplistic as it may seem, the game is definitely worth trying.

 

Looks fantastic! Great music too. I will buy the trilogy for sure.
