since the ship orientation is exactly the same in all screenies, i assume you don't do any actual ship movement beyond jumping? how is combat with other ships your size or bigger handled?
I did some prototype, in which I gave each reactor a characteristic line, a correlation between power output and how damaged it is. Some reactors perform great in pristine condition but its power output drops exponentially once damaged; Some reactors have average power output but is less sensitive to minor damages.

I loved it, but thought it too nerdy for others so probably not going to fully implement it, here is a screenshot from that prototype:
dood, this is the codex. no such thing as too nerdy here and additional depth is hardly ever a bad thing.

Ships bigger than fighter and bomber engage you from long distance. You should be able to see them on the scanner screen and a heavy weapon is required to attack them. I would say bigger ship battle is a bit like FTL. With the small difference that you can actually see the big ship and its bullets coming your way on the scanner screen. So it offers some time for you to adjust your crew members and also a chance to intercept in case it is a torpedo.
