Be aware that getting fleet basing rights does cost money.

And Portugal shouldn't be your first choice, since the cost scales based on the size and power of the target country. Meaning Portuguese are easily going to tax you 20g per month for naval access. Though also be aware that once you have started coring or colonization process, you can cancel the treaty since only the start requires sufficient range.

hmmm, as it is atm, its mostly Spain or Portugal that is close, besides France (some small islands east of Cuba).

Naval access means you can colonise almost anything from pretty early on. As Hindustan in the early 1500s, I got a ship with an explorer, docked at Swahili, took off (and cancelled rights), reached Hausa, rinse and repeat, reached Morocco, reached Ireland. In fact the main barrier to colonising New England from *India* was the attrition in the ocean rather than colonial range.

Then of course I forgot to turn it off and paid Ireland 1 gold a month for 200 years. Hindu Aid for Potato Island!

Ask Mali for basing rights and hit up Hue.

Still, since you can cancel the basing rights immediately after sending the colonist you basically only have to pay for 2 months. 1 to send the colonist, and 1 to start the coring process. And once you have the core you have your own naval base.

It's silly OP Really. See my Mongol Khanate game having half of Brazil colonized and Aztecs gone before the Europeans even started their colonization.

Quite an interesting set-up really. First game I've seen with a weak France.

Is it just me or is rare for the Reformation to really take off? Holland and Denmark are the only Protestant nations of any note.

England usually goes Protestant but is brought back by Catholic rebels. Funnily enough the Reformation usually does quite well in Ireland.

I liked CK2 and EU3. Some of the elements the Magna Mundi mod added to EU3 really made the game a lot more interesting to me, despite the poor balance (Piracy) and stability issues. The random events, the unique play styles and national decisions for certain options really made the game much more entertaining than it otherwise would have been.

Am I likely to enjoy EUIV in its vanilla iteration? What does it actually add over EU3?

Having a blast playing Byzantium, even though it's pretty goofy being able to bounce back from the terribad 1440 starting position just by blocking the straits with galleys. Kebab was removed from the premises by the 1560s, and Patriarch was removed from the Vatican a few decades later. Some of the Byzantine national bonuses are insane and restoring the pentarchy gives you more prestige than you could ever hope to lose.

in my game Byzans is a sunni calipath (if i remember correctly, Hungary defeated the turks in war and by some random chance had them release some nations) and i tried (b save-hopping) to convert them into Orthodox religion, but it looks like they will be stuck like that.

Don't remember the default key but just Shift + TAB to get the steam overlay and you'll see wich key it is in the Screenshot menu.

Do you guys have any sound problems with EU4? Because game sounds seems to go bork (by completely dissapearing) when I play a while and alt+tab a lot. Music stays fine though. I don't know, it may have something to do with the fact that EU4 runs rather shitty on my laptop (it's slower than than CK2 and I have monthly lag)

Or, knowing Paradox's newly acquired DLC fetish, I have to wait for "Sound of the Game DLC".

Yeah the sound is pretty buggy, think they are planning to get it fixed in the upcomming patch.

On another note, reading the Steam forums for EUIV hurts my brain.

EDIT: Well guess it explains it self. Steam forum.
