Fallout 2: NCR problem

When I enter the NCR, I'm attacked by the police. I think when I killed the slavers outside the city, I may have killed an undercover cop -- he didn't identify himself and was the last slaver I killed. I became a member of the antislavery Rangers, but the police of the city attack now.
My question: Though I'm going to continue with the game and finish it without the NCR if necessary, is there a way to clear your name with the police and talk with Tandi? My karma is high, 370 or something. Thanks.

I'm guessing it was an undercover cop, because my "to-do" list on the Pipboy says that I've killed a cop for Mira ( though I haven't even talked to Mira yet).

On an unrelated note, I left off last night at my first conversation with Myron, and it's going to be a pleasure to snuff that irritating twerp. (I know, he can join your NPCs, but he's the creator of the drug Jet.) A lesson for Myron: don't mouth off to the guy in power armor and armed to the teeth.

My goodness! Aren't you playing the unpatched version of the game? (I had similar problems there) If so, patch it, but only having grabbed a savegame converter (can't remember from where, but it wasn't hard to find AFAIR).

I don't remember anything about an undercover cop working in the slaver pen. Maybe it had something to do with running around NCR itself with your weapons drawn?

No, I left the weapons and stims in the car trunk outside the gates of NCR. The cop at the gate lets me in, I get past the two guards after the green entrance grid, and when I go to the Sheriff's office, the police open fire. (I made a mistake yesterday when I mentioned my karma -- it's over 900.)

One thing kind of amusing: when I went back to the Mordino casino to wipe them out (after having destroyed the Stables but not the slaves), the bouncers opened up on me and hit a prostitute in the process. Seven or eight hookers and a couple of pimps then began attacking the bouncers and the rest of the Mordinos, but not me in the process. It ended up with over a dozen corpses in the street before I went up to the second floor to finish the job. Has anyone else had this unintentional backup from the hookers and pimps?

Yep, they make great bullet shields.

I may have killed an undercover cop -- he didn't identify himself and was the last slaver I killed.

The one who says nothing and doesn't attack you until you attack him? I'm pretty sure he's just bugged.

As for your problem, if your followers have any weapons equipped, the police gets mad too. And if you so much as touch the lockers in the Sheriff's office, they'll start shooting too. And if you did kill the suicidal cop, Jack, to prevent the power-supply from being blown to bits, it might have triggered the cops' hostility due to a bug of some sort.

Thanks. Maybe it was Jack. I tried to talk him out of blowing himself up, but I didn't have enough charisma at the time and he died; I was able to fix the machinery and prevent the rest of the place from blowing up though. This all happened months ago in game time.

Trivial, but kind of fun: my NPCs are back, after the bug removed them. Vic appeared a few days ago (months in game time) when I talked to his daughter in Vault City; Sulik and Cassiday reappeared in the ground floor of Bishop's casino after I had finished off Bishop and family (except the wife). I now have five NPCs tagging along, so I'll upgrade their armor and weapons tonight.

Other possibilities are that you may have entered NCR with drawn weapons by mistake. If you enter NCR through the world map & appear within the city, the police quickly grow hostile. There can also be a problem having Gorris in the party, if your game is unpatched the police always conscider him to be armed.

Only things I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm in the San Francisco and Enclave endgame, but had some questions:

1. I helped Lynette in Vault City and Westin in NCR (instead of killing the latter) and got the experience points, etc. Was my character naive to help them? (I'll probably just wait for the end of the game to find out what happens to Vault City and the NCR.)

2. When I tell Tandi about Vault 13, she says "It's the answer to all our problems." How so?

I found that if I can get to the NCR Council area, the police don't attack. I can also get out of the area near the NCR Sheriff by running straight down the street and out.

3. By the way, the holograph of the San Francisco BOS member, Matt being killed by Horrigan was kind of poignant. Does this mean the BOS has been destroyed throughout California?

Thanks.

Well, maybe your character was naive, but I have to congratulate you on just FINDING the quest to help Westin from Lynette. I discovered it the third time I played the game and it was a complete surprise - I thought the only way to be informed about Westin is via Mr. Bishop.

1. You don't want spoilers, and I don't want to spoil it.

2. The NCR needs various bits of high-tech stuff from a Vault. You got then some good stuff in V15, yes, but V13 hasn't been ravaged by raiders and cave-ins, and could be a valuable source of resources.

3. No, of course not, if only because BIS could never get away with destroying everyone's favorite Brotherhood. I'm fairly sure only the northern outposts were gotten.

Now that you mention it, I have no fucking idea why the hell Horrigan would go to the trouble of killing Matt. I mean, why not go straight to Lost Hills?

Hehe...the Hooker Army is one of the more amusing points of New Reno.

(SPOILERS POSSIBLE)

Thanks for the replies. I'll wait until the end of the game for the NCR outcome. One thing I found yesterday was the Empathy perk cleared up some of the ambiguity when talking to Lynette, Stark, and others; the "right" and "wrong" responses are highlighted in different colors. The NCR people seem more reasonable now.

I tried using empathy on my latest playthrough of Fallout 1, just to see what happens.

It kept trying to get me to tell the Master and the Lieutenant where the Vault is.

SPOILERS possible

Ouch. I once told the LT where the Vault was, because he was saying something about Vault 13 lying to the WEST of the base (instead of to the east or north). The infamous security cam footage of the Chosen One getting dipped, the Vault getting stormed, etc. followed.

Fallout 2 was the first time I tried the Empathy perk. It gets rid of the one or two responses least likely to suit your character, leaving you with one to three responses, or so it looks to me.

I've never tried that perk. Maybe I should, sometime.

You DID put you weapons (and your follower's weapons) away before entering, didn't you?

same problem as the dude who started the thread

I did not know NCR's totalitarian rules applied to my NPCs as well, so I went about with Sulik and Vic totin' around some guns. I spontaneously come across Jack and his problem, and solve it. I gained experience and levelled up so I saved.

The problem...is that when i walked out of the building a copper spotted me and started trash talkin' and killing me.

And now I am stuck for I do not want to even try to fight back (they are pretty tough...) and lose karma. I've tried my friend's solution...making a break for it, running outta the city for a day or two then coming back...but then even BUSTER won't talk to me and every popo shows up as a red dot on my scanner.

By the way I patched the game.

Please SAVE ME!

You can't join them, but the BoS will let you into one of their bunkers late in the game. It's not a megacomplex like in Fallout 1, though; this is more of an apartment-sized listening post.

Well, actually, you do join them. Once you get to San Francisco, there's a quest you can do for the BOS that gains you entry. And loot. Much loot. The offices in the Den and in NCR (is it NCR? I can't remember...) don't have anything in them, though.

If you mean the FedEx, I didn't remember actually joining as a result. The third office does indeed have some nifty loot. Then again, it's been three years since I last played FO2.
