I'll admit it, that S.P.E.C.I.A.L. video was pretty good. First thing that actually captures the original Fallout spirit in years.

Ain't gonna save the game from being a steaming pile of turd, though.

I don't think it does at all.

Vault boy was supposed to help with guides for surviving the initial blast, getting to a vault and preparing to resurface after many years.

He's supposed to be a relic of the past, not a guide for the present.

...what, in your opinion, is the original Fallout spirit?

The Strength video isn't terrible, but it's got that indescribable cringe-inducing factor that all the Fallout 3 pre-release stuff had.

For me the idea of the behemoth is stupid. When you meet the first they give you the BFG so you can take him down with 2 or 3 shots. The second time the fucking thing is caged. And on top of it all, the biggest mofo (figuratively and literally) was Frank Horrigan... although I can't remember if his case was the same kind of FEV or not.

True. That fact, represented by the appearance of the supermutant in the video, is the only thing you people can pick at. Had they substituted that Behemoth for a generic "predicted" opponent (like a 3-headed dog that breathes fire, for example) then this video would feel precisely like one of those pre-recorded messages from the past instructing people on how to deal with the present. See Fallout 2 intro.

But knowing some of you lot, that wouldn't be enough for you. Even if there was no supermutant you'd just be picking at the next example...my money is on the appearance of the powerfist.

Which instructed people on how to use the G.E.C.K., not the abstract minutiae of chargen. One is a piece of world building, the other just tells you the stat description of strength in a cumbersome way.

Exactly, but I'd add that the video not only fails at capturing the classics' way of world building; but it's yet another proof that the good ol' Vault Boy has turned into a retarded version of what he was trying to parody.

I mean, just look at how Bethesda depicts the pre-war people more and more retardedly with every game. In FO3's Vault Tech explained how to cover your eyes using both hands because apparently their target audience was too dumb to act in an instinctive way, and now in FO4 they have to tell them what does it mean to be a stronger person!

How about writing a proper manual for that?

It's the best way to explain how a game's systems works. Chris Taylor knew how to draw a line between "depicting how the future will be to a vault dweller" and "letting the player know how the game works". Using cheap schlock like a cartoon to mock how Vault Tech taught people to survive in a postapocalyptic environment while introducing SPECIAL at the same time damages the world building, since it only makes sense if you imagine that the company had to explain what does it mean to be [Intelligent] and stuff like that.

Actually, the video also goes down the perk tree at the end, showing that the STR stat unlocks "crafting specialized protective gear" and "building clever weapons." It would be hard to cram all that in a tooltip.

I don't think it's right that actual part of the (prewar) world (educational videos) relate to the roleplaying system that is actually supposed to simulate that world. Just as vault boy collectibles in F3 it is nonsensical and breaks fourth wall bad.

The vault boy was supposed to be Vault Tec's Mickey Mouse or Ronald McDonald. But yeah, I think those who believe FO games are about the vaults and their dwellers are very wrong.
