Fallout: Does it truly deserve all the praise?

I have been reading over RPGCodex for a while now and it seems to me that Fallout is the game that gets the most appreciation here. That confuses me, for a number of reasons.

First, Fallout is not a fantasy game. There are no swords, no spells. For old school rpg nuts, that should be enough right there. This does not mean you cannot appreciate the odd game out from a different genre ofcourse, but a game out of the fantasy genre should not IMO classify as the best rpg out there for old schoolers.

Second, the dialogue choices left a lot to be desired. Many times I was left thinking that I do not want to choose any of the options presented but had no choice. It was jarring and made me come out of character.

Third, there was no pure diplomatic path as in the adventure games of old. You were forced to enter combat from the very beginning when you went up against rats as soon as you left the vault.

I hope I have made it clear why I do not think Fallout deserves a place as top tier computer rpg of all time. Keep a look out for my next thread, where I argue why Planescape Torment is an adventure game, NOT an rpg.

It's kind of a shame that while Fallout really is overrated to retarded levels, the only ones trying to pass any criticism about it are bad trolls.

This gives me an idea for a trolling thread, though. Should come back to it later.

I take offence at being called a troll good sirs and madam. Also, I am not this Drog you keep mentioning.

Also, Kosmonaut, if you have some sort of a problem with me please take it to pm, thank you very much.

Not really. I give non-trolling criticism to Fallout whenever occasion arises.

Ok, now I have something to work with - I can't detect a trolling alt based on fairly generic introduction alone, but this? Just unmistakable.

Star Trail, if you are 'real' then ignore the haters. If you ARE a troll though, then good job, you fooled DraQ,

Oh and yeah, Fallout is overhyped.

It's an Andhaira alt. Notice how they follow each other around...

Of course Andhaira is also an alt.

I don't give a shit if you're an alt or not. It still bears repeating:

Fallout is the greatest CRPG to date. It has been widely debated but it consistently satisfies all criteria in qualifying for most fans' all-time favorite. We've voted on it here, and it won.

So overhyped, no. There really was no hype for it (as it endured a rather low key release originally) but there certainly was hype for Fallout 2 due to its predecessor's success.

Has the perception of its greatness been inflated somewhat due to the nostalgia factor? I certainly think that's possible but also understandable.

But is it better than modded Oblivion with Hermione as a playable character? I think we all know the answer to that question.

Fapping material is always welcome. Can't say Fallout delivers on this requisite, thus the superior game is clear.
