    First time trying to play Fallout in XP. It keeps telling me I need 20 megs or more of free space on my drive. How do I get this thing running?

    Alternatively, just go with the minimal install option. It's a minor pain in the ass having to find the CD every time you want to play it, but it also means there's no reason not to have it taking up a paltry few meg on your HD for all eternity.

    Hmm... that's a very convoluted process.

    You're compatibility mode gave me an idea though: I went in and changed compatibility mode to Win 98/ME. It works perfectly. Don't know why I didn't think of that before! So thanks for mentioning it.

    That is all.

    I hate having to use CDs. Why does a program install icons if you're required to use a CD?

    The minimal option was good back when I had a 500 MB hard drive, but with 120 GB the Humongous option isn't so bad. ;)

    I've had the humonous install ever since I've had it. I should be able to keep the savegames, so maybe I'll uninstall it someday if I need the space. I've still got quite a bit though.

    Oh yeah, and I have XP.

    Here's the deal: Even if you have a tremendous amount of free space, it STILL says you don't. It asks if you would like to proceed anyway to which you should reply "yes." Do the humongous install and toss the disk in a drawer. I install them from the datafiles I have saved on my computer, anyway. No need for disks.

    Doesn't seem to work. It installs the files but when I try to run the game it just bounces me back to the desktop after messing with my video settings.

    There's a thingy you can add to the setup file to solve this exact problem, which I suffered from too. I can't remember the solution exactly, but I think there's a thread about it on NMA.

    Apart from that, I had no trouble with using it on XP, except it cutting off the bottom of the screen at 1024x768.

    That is convoluted?

    Anyway, hope you enjoy the game.

    Did somebody just bumb a year old thread? I thought for a moment Chefe had return. Anyways, No Mutants Allowed has detailed guides on how to get either Fallout working in XP, though I've never had any trouble doing so.

    Yep, that was me. A co-worker lent me his copy of Fallout (it's out of print and hard to find) but of course when I tried to install it on my machine it crapped out. Did a Google search on an install workaround for XP and stumbled upon this handy dandy thread.

    Found it, me.

    Insufficient Disk Space Error
    ------------------
    When you get that message it's either:
    A. You are really running low on diskspace and should free up some, or
    B. Your config files misguide you.

    The following solution is for the latter and was proven to work for both FO1 and FO2.

    In your Fallout directory find the fallout.cfg file and open it with Notepad.
    Note: Your file may look slightly different from the one listed below.

    [system] <-----look under this paragraph
    art_cache_size=130
    cdlock=C:\Programs\mIRC\download\cdlock.dat
    color_cycling=1

    critter_patches=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\data
    cycle_speed_factor=1
    executable=game
    free_space=20480 <---------- find this line and change the value to 0(zero). If the line is not there, simply add it.

    Anything that uses a timer does not work. The game is practically unplayable.

    It was better during DOS when the only real issue in installing a game was picking your sound card and IRQ settings.

    And creating that special boot with nothing loaded into conventional memory so that Ultima V would even load.

    Yeah, I never managed to play Ultima VII before Exult. Despite having the manual and knowing, I thought, everything one should know about EMS / XMS / loadhigh etc.
