I think this is the first I've seen a site give the award to NV over ME2, so props to them. ME2 is a good game, but not a good RPG (christ, how many times has that line been used here?).

Question. As we all know, ME2 is a (cover) shooter with a few stats. All CoD's since 4 (or before?) are (fp) shooter's with a few stats (in mp). How come they are never in the running for RPG of the year?

Anyway, as good as NV was, personally I had more fun with Div2 DKS. Funny how it barely gets a mention in these lists. In fact, I don't think any of the mainstream sites have even reviewed it.

Ooooh, I hadn't bothered to check out how Avadon was going till now because I thought it was too early. Just back from having a look on Vogel's site - it's looking really good I must say

Who want's to bet it comes out before AoD (despite being announced about 6 years later)?? Actually, how many games has Vogel released since AoD was announced? (3 or 4 I'm guessing). Does that mean AoD will be 3 or 4 times better than any of Vogel's games?

I too would be curious about this. New Vegas will probably win GameBanshee's RPGotY easily. There's not a lot of competition this year.

It was a good year for hybrid/action-RPGs though.

They wouldn't consider divinity 2 in the same league and I doubt they even touched river of time, so it was just ME2 vs FNV and it could've gone either way so it's nice that FNV won.

It was a good year for hybrid/action-RPGs though.

There were certainly many, but there weren't that many good ones were there? Off the top of my head I can only think of NV and DKS as having received enough acclaim. AP and 2W2 got very mixed reviews, Arcania was universally hated, and ME2... well it's not really a hybrid.

They also game GotY and "Real time strategy" awards to Starcraft 2, and then "Strategy game of the year" to Civ 5.

I think they've got as good a chance as anyone to make a good hack'n'slash with DS3. But I've never liked a h'n's in my life other than finding Icewind Dale mediocre-to-decent, and I don't see what room there is within that genre to do anything that would suit their strengths. If it was a tactical rpg I might get a little more excited, but even then I'd still raise my eyebrows - I just don't see how this takes advantage of the areas they have a competitive advantage. Seems like a mighty good way to get wtf-curbstomped by Bioware or whatever massively overfunded company can churn out with 10x the polish, 10x the fanbase and 20x the graphics.

FNV only suffers from being a standalone Fallout 3 expansion. Give it a strict handle on game mechanics and it's easily in Codex Top 10. Not that game mechanics alone make top 10 material (see Bloodlines) but FNV isn't that good to stand on its own.

I haven't seen anyone call a really good RPG an "RPG of the Year" for ages.
