Doom has great gun sounds, there are also those realistic shooters with real gun sounds but why do so many shooters have pew pew gun sounds? Doom was how long ago? Can't you make a rifle sound awesome? Sometimes they sound like only the chamber is moving, no gunpower explosion. In fact I prefer enhanced video game gun sounds over real sounds if they sound better. Funny thing is that when shooting real guns I don't really notice the gunfire unless I'm not wearing ear protection.

True dat. All these guns in Crysis/BF/CoD/etc. sound like soft pops which all sound the same and are tiring. Sound neither like real guns nor like meaty '90s fps ones. No wonder when BF3 uses shit like lion's roar for Abrams' engine instead of an Abrams engine (which sounds better).

CSS have the best gun sounds in an FPS tbh (also the snipers unlockable rifle, machinima from TF2 sounds pretty excellent). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o30lcEr49cY (starts at 40 seconds)

then there are guns from the sci fi sub genre but that's different.

Ironically he bashes hollywood movie sound but at the same time says "we used animals for falling towers, lion for a tank"

He's right though about exaggerating sounds. Guns in reality don't sound as loud and punchy. However at the same time sound of guns in BF games sucks. In the beginning of the video you can hear the sound of BFBC2.
Some loud but soft POP POP. Doesn't sound like guns at all.

That was the most pretentious load of blather I've heard in a while. He basically went "blah blah blah blah", on and on, without any substance at all. Was this an exercise to cram as many buzzwords in as possible or something? Seriously, why do people always make this difficult: Getting a gun noise is very simple: Hold up microphone. Fire gun. Voila. Gun noise. Anything else is simply being pretentious and artwanky, because somehow, reality is not realistic enough. Blah, blah, blah.

I always liked the ping of the M1 Garand in the first COD (or was it MOHAA?). Actually the first COD had the best weapon sounds overall, and the best war sounds period of a FPS. The fucker roared to wake the dead. Those flak guns at the beginning made your teeth rattle. Later everything got all quiet with some generic orchestral score taking precedence over the raw sound of combat that made CoD so good.

Yeah I like the M1 ping too, funny that they had to do with 8 shots before reloading in WW2.
Best sounds are Doom's shotgun+double-barrel shotguns and Jagged Alliance 2 RPK(a Russian mg) on auto.

Unreal, especially pre-patch was notorious for weak-ass gun sounds, but pre-patch flakcannon was just glorious although still way too quiet.

You may have some sort of hearing damage. I only fired actual guns twice (Makarov and some .38 special revolver), but fuck, were they loud, even with hearing protection. OTOH I expected much more recoil - Makarov had essentially none, .38 some slight, but perceptible recoil.

What games rarely do is differentiate between how relatively quiet guns are outdoors, and the head popping booms they make if you fire them indoors.

It's pretty hard for games to sensibly alter sound effects by environment, sound card makers have been trying for years but I can't think of any good examples.

There's a game called "Black" that came out for PS2 and maybe Xbox not sure. Its entire focus is on weapons and their sounds.

You were shooting indoors? As for recoil - only hollywood shit has a hand-tearing recoil for handguns unless it's that whatsitzname handgun that could shoot 7.62x51mm

There is actually a very simple solution - divide the environment into zones with different acoustic properties, alter the sound accordingly.

Unreal does that, except it pretty much only uses it for reverb. It can also alter pitch, distort the sound, modify volume and so on.

It's not automatic and mechanical, it demands hand-placement of zones, so it isn't perfect, but can work very well when used right.

Yup, indoors. And it's just that almost complete lack of recoil surprised me - I didn't expect much, but with Makarov (ok, it shoots weak-ass 9x18mm) I wouldn't be able to determine the direction of the recoil if I didn't know the obvious truth. .38 special gave very weak but actually noticeable kickback.

It used to be something of a hobby of mine to replace gun sounds in FPS games, mostly Marathon. Fun stuff and I agree, most games have terrible gun sounds now. Probably because they're trying to use "real" gun sounds instead of just going for the fantasy *BOOM* you'd expect from a video game.

As for different sounds indoors/outdoors, well, I know that there are programs that can change the environment of music or sounds so there's an echo of varying degrees. I wonder why they can't use this in games?

I remember the first time I was at an indoor range (I was about 6) and someone there had a shitty AK clone, probably a WASR10 and the first round fired sounded like God's colossal balls clapped against my forehead.

Weirdest gun sound - the tommyguns in Peter Jackson's 2005 King Kong movie.

Reminds me of when a gamer commented that Operation Flashpoint guns sounds are bad and that the M16 sounds like 2 planks of wood hitting each other... which is actually realistic.
