Here's a list of stuff that's likely coming out in 2009. Head on over for screenshots and links to more info but here's the cut from the RPG section:

Diablo 3

Drakensang: The Dark Eye: Finally a new game based of DarkEye pen and paper RPG (previously used in wonderful Realms of Arkania series)

Not the Time for Dragons

Deathspank: Episodic mix of RPG and adventure game from Ron Gilbert (creator of Monkey Island)

Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships: Fans have been waiting for real sequel to Sea Dogs for many years. We had to suffer through two failed atempt: Pirates of Caribbean and Age of Pirates. Fortunately fans were able to salvage those two and with many mods bring them closer to original Sea Dogs. This time Akella decided not to take any risks and simply hired Seaward (company formed by creators of those mods) to make this game.

Warrior Epic

Reluctant Hero: An innovative RPG that follows entire career of your character, till his very death from old age. By makers of Kult:Heretic Kingdoms (74% at Gamerankings)

Eschalon: Book2

Kivi’s Underworld: A casual hack and slash game from makers of Depths of Peril

Mysteries of Westgate: Adventure pack from makers of Darkness over Daggerford(one of very best NWN mods)

Age of Decadence: Hardcore indie RPG

The Broken Hourglass: An old-school Baldurs Gate 2-like RPG, done by Planewalker Games-indie team consisting of cRPG modders, lead by Jason Compton (the best BG2 modder, he did wonders to NPC and party members dynamic interaction). The game takes place in Tolmira (sword-and-sorcery setting, which PlaneWalker licensed) has isometric perspective, unlimited party, complex party-to-party interactions, lots of good old-school roleplaying and real-time with pause combat system

Risen: New RPG IP from creators of Gothic franchise

King’s Bounty: The Princess: First add-on.

Dungeon Party: MMORPG from Cyanide Studios, makers of Loki (7.0 from GS), Chaos League and upcoming Blood Bowl.

Wizard 101: MMORPG from KIngIsle Entertainment, a company formed by Tom Hall (co founder of both ID Software and ION Storm)

Seeker: Epic space opera RPG by LogicFactory, makers of ToneRebellion(8.1)

    Yes, Deathspank.

    Thanks Dandelion!

Already out for a couple of months.

While not on the same level as Melirinda's writing, I remember mods like Kelsey as being atrociously clumsy and not above fan-fiction.

There are more RPGs coming out than I expected. I will risk holding on to a little bit of hope for the genre of single player CRPGs.

    But only a little.

And how many of those games will disappoint and turn to shit as The Codex turns its unforgiving gaze towards the new years?

That's probably my 2nd or 3rd most anticipated title in the RPG section. Should be quite a hoot. Too bad it's episodic, though.

I've been off the hook of most Indie RPG news, but as far as I know, VD didn't state any deadlines for Age of Decadence, or that it will be released this year..

A combat demo should be released in a few months. That would determine the rest.

If the full game comes out Thursday, does it mean the demo will be available Wednesday?

Seems like the first good year for RPGs in a while. I've been eagerly waiting for AoD since the day it was announced.

Won't be a demo otherwise, would it?

    From the forums:

"The demo will be set in the arena district (so you’ll be able to see what AoD towns look and feel like). You’ll fight different opponents, ranging from local scum and captured criminals to professional fighters looking for easy coins and guild recruiters showing off their skills and prowess. You'll fight against single fighters and groups, fast lightly armored opponents and heavy, ironclad juggernauts. That should give you a good feel of the combat and give us plenty of feedback to work with.

You'll earn skill points, improve your skills, loot dead bodies, sell & buy equipment, commission special weapons (you won't be able to craft weapons yourself in the demo), etc. Your opponents aren't random. It's more of a ladder structure and it would be interesting to see how high you'll be able to climb."

Reluctant Hero is still alive? The initial concept and hype sounded good then it just sorta faded away.

Eh, you may want to be careful how you present it then. Steve Peeler had some relevant thoughts on his experience with the Depth of Peril demo.

Eschalon book 2, AOD and Reluctant hero look interesting.

So is Broken Hourglass comment out this year or purely speculation?

If you sent them a new one they'd probably put it up.
