GameShark has a review of Avencast - Rise of the Mage, a new action-RPG from Austria. The author criticizes the plot and writing, but is generally quite positive; here's what he likes the most about the game:
Avencast has some pretty challenging puzzles that range from simple (freeze some water to make a bridge or drink a potion to cross fire) to the more obscure puzzles involving runes and the rather challenging puzzles in the planeterium. The game doesn't make it easy so it is important to save often and use your head. Patience is the key and sometimes common sense plays a big role in your success and failure in the game. The puzzles are what really makes this game shine because they require multiple steps and break up the action.
An action-RPG requiring some thought every once in a while? What a surprise. Also, you have to play as a mage in this one; could be interesting if the reason for this was that the quests and the plot essentialy concerned magic and would make no sense for a fighter character.

Looks like the trend to turn rpgs into adventure games has continued.

...which is actually better than turning them into FPS games ... ahem...

I remember seeing somewhere, it may have been on this site or another that in the first rpg games there were also puzzles where you had to fix something to get the light working or reading a book or two to get information on how to do a certain quest.

I don't get abysmal 'hate' for FPS games, though. I mean, I do like to play Half-Life or even Halo: Combat Evolved (the first halo). I didn't much care for Daikatana, but not so many people did, I hear.

However, I agree that RPGs shouldn't be made into fps game, and I would rather see RPGs+adventure games marry than RPGs and FPS games.

They're exceptions, and rather old ones at that.
