    New to RPGs, good sir?

    ...

    Uh, what?

You can't use diplomacy in quests?

Except for the wide selection of different creatures supports a wide variety of tactics and combinations.

The dumbass gave the game 3/5. Cons: Dated graphics; tedious combat; unapproachable story. Being stupid clearly sucks.

So when is the PC version coming out? I've finally learned to enjoy Spiderweb games despite their really ugly graphics and want to play this.
What's up with the Mac version coming out before the PC version anyways? Why did Jeff do that?

    Tell me your secret !
I enjoy Dwarf Fortress and roguelikes in general, i play Interactive Fiction frequently, Gameboy emulated games no problem, but Spiderweb games are so ugly-looking i cant imagine ever enjoying those putrid disgusting eye-exploding games of theirs.

The Windows version is scheduled for early March 2009. Jeff Vogel is a long-time Mac user and develops for this platform first although as to why he still does it is difficult to tell for me. It's possible that the majority of his customers are indeed on the Mac platform where competition hasn't been as fierce as on Windows when he started. Or he employs Mac users as unwilling beta testers ;-). Maybe he's just more comfortable with some Mac technologies during the initial programming and design stage while later focusing solely on porting. *shrug*

I dunno, I tried them dozens of times and got put off by the uglyness. But then I thought "oh well screw it this time I'll just play on and don't care about the graphics" and, well... I got interested and got to the second chapter in Avernum 5. And if you play it long enough, you're getting used to the graphics. Yes, they're ugly, but hey the game is kinda funso whatever.

I can speak only for myself but I really do enjoy Vogel's settings and how he can bring them to life mostly through good writing (I'm especially fond of his dry humor). The combat is adequate and the games feature a solid story with lots of C&C (especially the Geneforge series). I never really had a problem with the graphics, but that may be due to growing up with games with 8 bit colors and 320x200 resolution :-P

Geneforge's graphics didn't really bother me. Don't get what all the fuss is about. Prelude to Darkness, on the other hand...
Haven't played far in any of the games, though, I only got an hour or so into the demo for 4. What one should I start with?

Doesn't really matter I guess. With Avernum, I started with 5 and had no problems. The stories in Avernum are always different in each game, no big huge storyline that goes from 1 to 5 that you could miss. Don't know with the Geneforge games, though, but I think it's the same there.

No. 1-3 are fairly interconnected with overarching plot and cast of characters. Of course they give fair amount of background on events of previous chapters so one wouldn't get lost, but a connection *is* there.

How many quests can be done with dialog, stealth or environment interaction and puzzle solving in Geneforge? I bet only a very small percentage of it.

I people want to call their games rpgs and give players a chance to create characters whose strong points are other skills besides combat the game is responsible for creating sufficient role-playing chances to use those skills, like a good GM would do, instead of pushing the player into a certain play style.

If it's like the first four games, the game can be completed without ever issuing an attack command.

For those of you who only have PCs, this game is great and well worth waiting (and paying) for. I hated Geneforge 3 because it only had loyalist and rebel factions, but now you have five factions and additional endings to be found elsewhere as well.

Also, I doubt the reviewer even played through the game. It's actually somewhat linear due to the geography, especially when compared to Geneforge 2. And damnit, Jeff Vogel did need to come up with some new creation designs, they get a bit stale after seeing them in game after game.

This is the one series of games, I just could not get in to. Tried the demo's.... but the interface and such... I'm not a graphics wh0re, hell I like and replay Ultima IV and V which are shitty old school DOS, it just felt a poor implementation. Which hindered my future exploration of this series. I just could not get into this series.

The problem for me was that i started off with geneforge 4. They used a system whereby strength affects only the equipment you wore, not what you were carrying. Moving items during combat costed action points.

Then i play the older geneforges because i liked 4, and it turns out strength affects both your equipment and carry items. However, moving items during combat doesn't cost action points.

So it turns out the way to play through older geneforges with low strength, is to load up as much loot as you want, when combat starts, open inventory, drop items one by one, then you can actually initiate actions in combat.

As a result, i've completely given up on geneforge 1-3 not due to the graphics, but bad inventory management of having to drop/pickup items every single tough battle.

I think that's a fault of the player, not the game.
