I've played it years ago when it was new and I loved it. Though I was playing with a potato dub so much of the humor of the game was lost on me (though the translator tried). At least we didn't have the stupid censorship and siren/mermaid character had uncovevered breats :P

While playing as the Kabuto was great I always found the alien section to be most appealing. Especially the base building missions (though when I played there was an exploit where you built up your base commited suicide and the mission would restart, but with the base already finished). The weakest section was the mermaid ones and the race tracks. (oh god the race tracks).

The asymetric gameplay that the game places in your hands is the best aspect of it. While some are better than other it prevents the game from becoming boring and stale. I don't know how it holds up today - it might've aged really badly, but at the time it was one of the more enjoyable games on the market. It was a lot better than for example Sacrifice. Though Sacrifie was more RTS focused and Kabuto is more action focused.

If you want to try it today, prepare yourself for some badly dated graphics (though the cartoony stilization helps a lot) and some badly dated shooting mechanics (for the alien sections). But it's worth to check out just for the charming setting and the asymetric set-up.

Which is surreal to consider, because when the game released I was practically nutting myself over the visuals.

The SP campaign was great(at the time at least, dunno how well it held up), but I always wondered what a full multiplayer game would be like with the appropriate ratio of players on all factions.

Very good and often hilarious game, it's sad that we don't get games like this anymore, these days it's all lulzy memes when a game tries to be funny...

Giants is still well worth playing but it will likely make you rage from time to time since there is no option to save your game during missions. My uncle used cheats to get past one of the more frustrating levels, however, cheats don't work with all versions of the game. It works fine on modern OS.

This game and Sacrifice was two of the few truly unique games from the 2000s. Amazing stuff, I recommend everybody to play it.

Funny, I replayed it a few weeks ago. In my opinion the game aged very nicely. Just be sure to get the 1.497 patch from here: http://www.giantswd.org/?file=2 which eg. fixes issues with mouse controls on modern computers.

Replaying brought back a lot of childhood memories, it really is an unique game :)

Sacrifice holds up waaaaaaay better than Giants and is better game on so many levels.

Though Polish version of Giants has absolutely fucking amazing VA work and i almost shat my pants few times due to ingame events and VA that managed to make it all worth it.

Great game. I recently replayed it a couple of years ago. Still holds up just as well as it did 15 years ago. Smooth controls, varied mechanics, a high but fair difficulty level and above all the fantastic writing and humor all make it into one of the best 3rd person action games ever created. The Meccs and Delphi campaigns were fucking awesome, but the Kabuto levels were a drag I'll admit. Still well worth picking up for 9 jewros or whatever it's priced on GOG.

Yeah, this game is good and still holds up.

Well, the Mecc campaign and the non-race reaper parts. Actual kabuto stuff is not as good, and the game is only going downhill after meccs.

Also, it still looks kinda pretty.

Yeah, the more I read about it, the more I like it. Still, after much thought, Giants: Citizen Kabuto just aint the game I'm looking for atm. What game I'm looking for? Fuck me, I have no idea.

Now, I've gotta ask tho, are there any more references to Citizen Kane beside the title?

    laclongquan

I actually played Startopia - liked it quite a bit, dont remember why I stopped. Reminded me of Evil Genius and Ghost Master, both of which were among my favorite games growing up, and well, still are.

The only similar game to Kabuto I can think of was Armed and Dangerous, it had very similar humour tho as a game I think it was worse than Citizen.

I remember trying to lend this game to other people but nobody's pc could run it.

The cinematics were great for the aliens but I remember enjoying the siren's levels the best. There was just a really satisfying flow to building up to those spells and wrecking everything with them. Kind of Populus The Beginning light with flashier graphics and tits.

Armed and Dangerous is pretty bad compared to Giants. It has a similar tone and wacky feel to it, but gameplay is a lot worse, you play the same character for the entire game and it's the same shit every level, imagine if entire Giants played like the first mec mission before you get the jetpack (only with more weapons). The only variation is stationary turret shooting sections and those are even worse than regular levels. I vaguely remember you get some jetpack or helicopter in one level, but if you do, it wasn't very good.

Also, despite coming out a few years after Giants it looks worse because most levels take place in a mud/snow map, a desert/mountains map or a muddy field/forest map, it all looks ugly compared to Giants, the only map that was somewhat interesting looking was near the end where you go up a mountain and there's rain obscuring your vision. It's not the worst thing I've played, but a very mediocre game.

It ran ok on mine back in the day (did get choppier in a few occasions) but it randomly crashed, and there is no saving within levels. Only on my next upgrade the problem was gone and I managed to get past the last mecc mission as it didn't crash on the new PC (a pity they got just one base building mission).

Also someone who I borrowed the disks to lost mah CD, have only disc one or disc two, the other vanished :decline:

Armed and dangerous is worse, but if you have nothing better to play, I guess you can. It is not a game I personally would ever revisit, unlike Giants.

IIRC Armed and Dangerous was rushed, unfinished and a bad console port to boot, and that's without even mentioning the turret sections. There's really no reason to play it.

Giants ran alright for me, but the first time I played I had a bug where the game would freeze every time during loading before the last racing level, and patching didn’t help, I didn’t see the rest of the game until like a year later when I started it again on another version :argh:

Not gonna lie, the reason I necrod this thread was because I was looking for topless Delphi pics and one of the results leads here. So now you know I'm not a homo.
