What would you suggest more programmers would do considering that they weren't making an engine from scratch?

I mean if more programmers = better game, then any given Bioware project would be better than Pillars or New Vegas.

Right, I wouldn't be surprised if some of these designers are even more writers under another title. What the hell is a narrative designer anyway?

Programmers are important but they can't replace developers in the same way that engineers can't replace architects. The real problem is whether these designers really know their craft as opposed to have a bunch of half-cocked ideas. Of course, if these half-cocked ideas end up being poorly implemented because you don't have many programmers then is even worse.

That would greatly improve their games. Even if they're using Unity there's always room for more programming & scripting in RPGs. Games like PoE could certainly use it, and less writing.

A writer who just writes outlines?

edit: Not that there's anything wrong with that. The interplay between narrative and gameplay systems is more important than the actual content. If anything, the problem with these RPGs is too much creative writing that doesn't serve the actual gameplay needs.

Narrative designers are what they call writers at Obsidian because they believe the job requires more than just writing.

Well, I think you know that every single game project has a backlog of ideas and a wish list. And that the backlog is never something that can be completed and things on the wish list are rarely started. So more programmers could work on anything from those lists as a start.

In terms of features that players would notice that I can come up with off the top of my head, how about:
-Adding turn-based combat resolution to the engine. (As an option or foundational work for the next title)
-Better support for the features that kickstarter stretch goals hit, such as the stronghold.
    -More tools (modding)
-More tools (automated gameplay simulations to test design/balance changes)
-Anything that would allow them to delete text by conveying things through the world/setting.
    -Elimination of loading screens
    -AI (enemy behavior)
    -AI (configurable party behavior)
    -Endless dungeon of escalating threats
-Multiplayer (not for me, but seems popular in Original Sin)

That said, you don't need to hire more programmers. Culling the number of writers alone would improve the game, by reducing the word count. :smug:

Yeah let's just ignore Carrie Patel's promotion to narrative lead for Deadfire. A clear example of someone's expertise and work being ignored and not acknowledged.

Sawyer was Deadfire's lead narrative designer before that, so it was still an upgrade.

As I've said before, there was no one better qualified for the job (this is not a compliment).

what's the point of being an owner if you have to fight everyone else to get an idea across, seems counter-intuitive to me

New Obsidian review from last month:

I believe Sawyer is "bad data fed to directors" and Cain/Boyarsky are "good data making delusional decisions" based on Troika, perhaps there may be arguments to the contrary?

Bonus: inXile review from earlier this year
That's our ineptile. :) Fellow misspelled dysfunctional though.

I don't think Outer Shapes or PoE2 had "bad data fed to directors". MCA has praised both Matt Singh and Brandon Adler (especially Singh) as great producers, and both had concerns and feedback about PoE's direction during development and/or in their internal reviews. TOW also doesn't look like a project that spiralled out of control (its limited scope has been clear for a while), so it doesn't seem to fit the other example either.

That person worked at Obsidian for more than 5 years, so it's not necessarily about recent projects. FNV is a better example of delusional decisions. :M
