Super Metroid - 8/10
Pretty fun, slightly overhyped. Spawned the Metroidvania nonsense. Fun game with good exploration for a platformer (for it's time). Every game that copied its formula does it better but this is a good introduction.
Even though Super Metroid is flawed (floaty jumping, Maridia, slightly clunky controls, etc) none of the other 2D Metroid games have as much quality content; Zero Mission is significantly shorter and Fusion is linear. Super Metroid is still arguably the best 2D Metroid game.
How is Fusion linear?

Because it locks you in an area until you complete the objective for the most part. And if remember right you can't go back to those completed areas at all or at least a certain point in the game. Sure you can techincally sequence break areas but since the game is designed around talking to ADAM so you can lock and unlock doors you can't really beat the game by doing so. Fusion was the whipping boy of metroid fans until Other M, which is just Fusion on steroids if you sit think about it.

But you still need to explore the area, right? Super Metroid isn't really an open world since there's a sequence of areas to progress and the game gives no alternatives to the player (sequence breaks are exploits so they don't count).

In Super you're able explore the available areas at your discretion and are not told where to go, and backtrack to boot. In Fusion where you need to get to go is marked on the map and you just go to next area after done the objective, and only that area, are locked in the area until you complete it. By default that is more linear. Fusion makes up for this by making the combat a bit harder.
