    Tip for Ultima 8: Don't buy/play it.

I watched the intro, but I don't understand the Ultima storylines very well. The only games I played were the Underworld titles so I am lagging a bit behind the series. Mostly I'm wondering if I'm missing out on some interface things. Opening the character menu, and then to the bag, and then shifting things in there seems counter-intuitive even for a game of that age. It just leaves me wondering how much and of what I should be taking if the entire world is open to one's grubby little fingers. But yeah, I did not get the laughing in the blacksmith home, other than it made me assume there was something important in there.

Regarding the flying over the Isle of Avatar, is that what causes the game-breaking bug where a dungeon or somesuch is closed off permanently?

The interface is simple as fuck. Drag and drop, click, double-click. Forget all the consolized menu-based crap of the past decade.

Did you watch the intro? The big red guy is laughing at you. He's going to be laughing at you a lot.

    :decline:

Clearly you've been spared of ever playing an Elder Scrolls title.

The point I'm driving at is that the game was developed during an era when gameplay mechanics were still all over the place in many regards. The fact the game opens up with a murder mystery reminds me of many adventure titles... and the utterly random ways to "solve" their puzzles, that's all. And if I can pick everything up then... well, fuck, I don't know, should I? I've had many bad experiences from this time period with games where I missed some obscure item here or there and it ended up more or less ending the game. Designers today know this, too. As for the laughing guy, I know it's him, but that still doesn't explain anything. I watched the intro, but... it meant nothing. Just a red face literally telling me he is the bad guy. I don't know fuckall beyond that. I'm a modern-man teleported into a video game? Or something? Or into another world? I don't really know what's happening, space and time are complete mysteries to me. Not that it's completely necessary to the enjoyment of the game, just that story-wise I have no idea what the greater picture is.

As for the interface. It's simple, but not intuitive. XCom dropped in '92 if I remember right and its interface is very simple and easy to use. Ease of use != console shite, it just means good game design. I'll get over it, but still. I think the main problem is that, at least with the GoG version, there is a bit of lag and difficulty clicking the check marks to scan through certain things.

It's not an adventure game. You generally don't need to worry about any item-based puzzles until you're told about them. You might want pick up anything seems extremely unique and useful, but again, don't worry about it too much.

 Sounds like you need to read a plot synopsis of the previous games. Or, you know, just play them. It's true that you can't really grasp the full point of U7 without having experienced the semi-utopic "Age of Enlightment" games (U4-U6) that preceded it. Particularly U6.

The interface was designed in the early 90's when some game designers thought that keyboard control was going to be completely deprecated in favor of a more holistic mouse interface. Needless to say this is a highly PC-centric design philosophy. :obviously:
You interact with the game world pretty much like you'd interact with Windows 3.x of that era. Dragging and dropping items around, double-clicking to interact with things. You double-click yourself to access your inventory, stats, etc. Using your keyboard is the easiest way to enter combat, though (just press 'C').

Re lag : Yeah, I know what you're talking about. If it really bothers you that much, play the game with Exult, maybe that will help.

Yes. The last door in the game will never open. You completely break the game and you cannot ever finish. Period.

The real WTF is the flying carpet itself. Don't use it - it's a game breaker (in more ways than one) and should never have been put in the game.

Is it considered cheap to have all this magic armor so soon in the game? I discarded the fire sword because the MIDI-crackling was way too annoying. I guess I'll have to break it out in times of need, mostly. I think I've been beating up on goblins so far, not quite sure what they are. Also not sure where to go in Britain other than to somehow find the hook-guy and the two Fellowship folks (who, apparently, are now elsewhere). I do think it's funny to have a kid tagging along killing shit (I think) with a sling. Even though my members are ranged, they still close in for close combat. I might be missing something with the ammo there (they do have ammo, maybe not equipped right?). Amusing game.

Where'd you get it? In any case, stats are more important than equipment in Ultima 7.

Keep on following them, but don't expect that to lead you to the endgame. Do sidequests as you encounter them.

I just bought all the Wing Commander games, as I wanted to record the soundtracks to these for my Youtube channel.

    I never played this series.

Enjoy. I'd recommend that you "acquire" the expansion packs as they are an integral part of the storyline of WC1 and WC2.

Far be it for me to encourage unsavory processes but really since you actually paid for the games I don't see why you cannot acquire original version to be able to do what you want. Bitgamer has everything including the Kilrathi Saga versions(for those that expected the GoG versions to be complete and updated).
