Huh, I have never heard of this game before. It reminds me a little of Ultima 6 from the way it looks. It sure has an interesting looking skill system as well with lots of non-combat skills.

It's an open world RPG where you only have 100 days to solve the main quest, but there's zero handholding. Like Fallout 2, you need to explore different settlements and find clues on where to go next (there's hundreds of clues). Darkness covers the map as time progresses making locations inaccessible, so you need to plan carefully where you want to travel.

It was ahead of its time due to the sheer amount of non-combat skills and spells for a game that came out in 1992.

There are also hundreds of unique NPCs with memorable interactions.

Translation: It's a large game world with lots of distractions that you must mostly ignore to be able to beat the game due to the time limit and darkness shrinking down the map.

Trying something different (that doesn't pan out) =/= Being ahead of its time.

CotFR dared to be different. That doesn't always work out.

They're fairly different beasts since Low Magic Age is D20 tacticool combat. Depends on how much you enjoy the combat in things like Knights of the Chalice, Pathfinder Kingmaker, etc. I also haven't taken a look in a while but they've partially added the dynamic campaign mode I think. Been waiting until it's either done or more finished before I take another peek.

With GOG's rather low profits, is it time for many codexers to admit that GOG isn't as big as they think and most PC gamers really don't give a shit about lack of drm?

35 million in sales is really low. GOG seems to have a higher mind share than market share.

It would or should be easy for Epic to overtake it, no?

Most don't. They just want to buy games on Steam because all of their friends are there and most of the multiplayer games are there. They won't give a shit about DRM until it directly affects them and bites them. Out of sight, out of mind. Who cares about DRM? I'm always online anyway. Yeah yeah.

I ain't sharing my games with the Steam users when the apocalypse happens.

When a huge number of your sales are made at 2 to 10$, 35 millions is quite a lot of products sold actually. All with tiny cuts going to server costs and shit.

I hope things get better for them, because we need a real alternative to Steam that also puts costumers first and has no DRM. With Epic yanking releases from GOG this year, it's going to be incredibly hard. I hope Epic crashes and burns, and that GOG survives the hard times coming and grows much more sustainable. But I don't know how they're going to do that. I don' think pre-orders for Bloodlines and Cyberpunk are going to cut it.

But that's not going to happen at all. I brought this point up in the other thread a month ago, games that release on gog sell even better on steam with DRM.

GOG to me was never a Steam alternative. Rather a place to get old games and maybe the odd game I could not get on Steam. They just don't have the catalogue to enable them to be a viable competitor to the big digital stores. Should have stayed in their niche.

Kinda inevitable to expand, you will run out of old games eventually. What I don't get is how you only make a few thousand from 35 million.

well, GoG somewhat hit their limit of easy to grab and fix up older games without getting bogged down in figuring out who owns what rights and which widows or defunct companies need to be paid off to get said rights. The Diablo move was pretty smart though, and partnering up would be a stop gap until they can get themselves in order. But then again, that model would hit the limits pretty fast.
CDPR could probably justify running GoG at a loss since it has given them a bigger name and a not insignificant part of the digital market

I just want them to steal the Metaltech rights from HiRez so I can stop fiddling with HiRez's terrible isos and lack of soundtracks

Stores other than GoG which propose DRM-free installers generally also allow to only sell a Steam key instead which is what many studios choose to do. I don't know if GoG converted many studios from not wanting to sell games without DRM to finally agreeing to, maybe they did or maybe many studios have always just considered it's not worth bothering selling anything else than Steam keys. Either way that GoG does not leave the choice and that they became big enough that many studios bother to sell on GoG and then sell DRM-free versions of their games while otherwise they would not is truly great, I love GoG for that.
