Going to play Fallout: New Vegas for the first time, requesting sage 'dex advice.

Are you guys complaining that the combat is hard, or what?
No, the combat is just shit. The gunplay is godawful and don't even get me started on Vats. The fact that even takedowns from your companions trigger those annoying slowmos is just laughable.
Other than that, I agree with all your advices. I followed every single one and suddenly a great game has revealed itself :)
Only Patiencia has been a bit lackluster. I prefer a modded Hunting Rifle despite lower dps (switched to Bozar as soon as i could afford it)

Well, duh, the disgusting nature of FO3+ combat is undisputable. It's just that I assumed that you guys were lacking some skill/insight to deal with it, so you'd perceive et as even more sucky. :P
Paciencia is god! As long as you aim just right and don't try to hit heads at extreme distances - it's got a bit higher spread than other sniper rifles. What makes it so strong is 2 things: its critical damage bonus is not just the +1x base damage, but +2x (which makes it as high as one of AMR in terms of pure damage), and it comes with 3.5x zoom, which is highest in the game, same as what you get from the scoped sniper rifles. Its damage is enough to 1-shot anything but the most hp-bloated enemies.
Scoped hunting rifle is a very solid choice and is more than enough damage for all the normal enemies anyway. Hell, while exploring the area between Novac and Camp Searchlight I found some cave with a unique varmint rifle (Ratslayer) that came pre-equipped with cope and silencer + a bit stronger damage (which was still very low, around 20 per shot). It was enough to take out legionnaires in Cottonwood Cove and Nipton entirely, with mostly 1-shots, without ever needing to enter these locations even.

I found Bozar lacking in terms of per-hit damage (maxes out at 20, IIRC, which means it's halved or more vs any well-armored enemies), but it's a good bursty close-combat weapon vs unarmored enemies, I suppose. For close gun combat I use 12.7mm SMG instead, it rips through anything as if it was paper, due to its very high per-hit damage.

3. Enter sneak mode, aim and shoot. A sneak attack critical (any hit on a mob while sneaking with [hideden] is a 100% sneak crit) does roughly 4x times the weapon's damage per hit. More, if you manage to hit a head. That's enough to 1-shot anything but the toughest mobs (early on, that's only giant radscorpions, and it's better to avoid those anyway).

Sneak attack + Better Criticals + Anti-Materiel Rifle + Headshot = 1 shot kill of pretty much everything

Add Psycho, Yao-Guay meat and some other damage boosters for the very few enemies that would otherwise survive the hit.

I know. AMR is only really needed against the toughest hp-bloated mobs like the special deathclaws etc. It's pretty unwieldy otherwise - too heavy and slow. I found Paciencia adequate vs strongest mobs (its crit bonus damage is the same as AMR), and gauss rifle can be used as energy weapons alternative, too. Most enemies don't even need that kind of power, though - I used the silenced sniper rifle instead (and later replaced it with Christine's unique version from Old World Blues).
The easiest way to boost sniper weapon damage through the roof is actually simply using the hollow-point ammo. Whatever DT enemies could have, tripling it will still be a much lower compensation than the 1.75x damage bonus.
Armor-piercing ammo is really just for full-auto guns, which (almost) all have the low per-hit damage and thus suffer from the DT most.

Get any (and I mean, any) humanoid companion as soon you can get one. That means either Boone or Veronica. Or maybe Arcade if you manage to get a couple of stealth boys and then sneak past deathclaws and fiends between Sloan and New Vegas.

there is actually a way to get pass the deathclaws without the use of stealthboys and minimal sneak

-head to the black mountain
-get to neils shack
-from there you have 2 options, either jump on the rocks on your left or continue down the road which is not advisable because you may get ambushed or stumble upon mutant patrols.
-continuing upwards you will see on your left a ncr trooper body, and an opening between the rocks that has bear traps on it.
-beware also huge boulder that will come to crash you as you ascend, avoid it by turning left.
-sucesfuly making at the top of the passage you now see on your right the top of black mountain.
-head left and you are free, there are no enemies here for a long distance and you may stumble upon the ncr safehouse.

Sneaky! I totally forgot that you can bypass the black mountain patrols this way.

I still can't help but be really, really fucking flabbergasted that a video by the smosh games channel could say Fallout 3 is retarded, New Vegas is good, and the classics are the best. I mean I don't watch the smosh games channel but knowing what little about smosh I know makes me think some wise man came along and did just this video.

The problem is that video just came out.. in the Post Mortem life cycle of Fallout 3.
Please see the appendix for the full life cycle of Bethesda Games:

  • Pre-Release
    • *HYPE OH MY GOD*
  • The "Honey Moon"
    • (Where people are exploring and think.. hey this is great)
  • Denial Stage
    • (Okay, Okay... We know its shallow.. but mods will fix it!!!)
  • The Post Mortem
    • With the next game on it's way.. Now everyone is an expert on how shitty the last one was...
    • (Especially with that 1000 hours played under their belt)

Where expecting basics is considered perfectionism
There is tip for making huge caps:
1: Get a good melee\unarmed weapon (power fist is a good choice)
2: Go to a ncr camp (Camp forelon hopes, camp golf are best locations)
3:Kill every veteran Ranger from behind while you are [Hidden] . If you do this with one hit you wont lose reputation and nobody notice.
4:Sell their stuff and have fun
5:Come back 3 days later and repeat .

Here is THE tip for making huge caps in FONV: play the game.
Frankly, I've had more trouble finding traders WITH sufficient caps to buy my loot than finding loot itself.

Or you could just sell weapons and armor you don't use. Also, go to the casinos.

I know they're shallow mini-games, but I've spent a lot of time in the NV casions to the point where when I quit playing Blackjack I'm genuinely surprised because I forgot I was playing FNV.

I wish caps were harder to come by early in the game, would encourage gambling. As it is, it's purely a "for fun" exercise.

Yeah but when you arrive at Vegas, you'll probably have a few thousand caps. Let's say 2000. Some of the weapons sold in the Gun Runners' store are easily ten times that value, so there's still a reason to try to gamble.

The worst part is the credit check to get into the Strip. Who doesn't have 2000 caps at that point!? Even if you didn't, you can make that amount in 10 minutes with 5 Barter and no meta-knowledge by killing Raiders and selling their equipment.

The ability to forge a passport, get one from the King as a favor or make a Science check (especially the failure version, "Robot! Let me past!") are really, really nice, but ultimately pointless options because of the inconsequentially low credit check.

Indeed, and it's a problem with a lot of modern RPGs. They make multiple solutions to rather simple problems, where it's easier to just power through in two seconds. [nostalgiagoggles]In the old days you would have to find alternate solutions because powering through was hard as hell, or required a super high level. Now it's just flavor material most of the time.[/nostalgiagoggles]

That's an example of the fabled gameplay and story segregation. MOst people pay you a few hundred caps when you do quests for them, and that's if you're lucky. 2000 caps was a lot of cash for any common civilian.

Sadly, way too much people ignore this...

The quest is triggered by having an ammount of approval with Arcade, but you can meet all of them separatedly (just to chat, though) and iirc you can find almost every piece of the Enclave armor by yourself.
