On a technical level, this is hands down the best Quake release so far. These maps use a ton of amazing trickery using only vanilla progs, which is just insane when you know how it works. Some of the themes used, such as the Wild West map, actually work really well mostly thanks to the crazy scale of the maps.
2017 is one hell of a year.

Doubt you'll see this on Quaddicted even when it's finished, but I've released a demo of my slaughter map pack Quenching Urges Of Constant Killing, featuring two VERY PURPLE, stupidly hard, totally fair and balanced™ slaughtermaps (out of about ten). It's an experiment in Sunder-like slaughter gameplay in Quoth, with hundreds of monsters at once and vital powerup management for maximum efficiency and speed. Unlike Doom slaughtermaps, however, these maps are much faster paced. This project is mostly inspired by the stupid, hilarious and devilish Italo Doom by Ribbiks and Dannebubinga and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Oh and this is MAP03. It has 1132 monsters, so many that neither Quakespasm nor Mark V can display the number correctly in the stats screen.

I played the Arcane Dimensions map pack. Why can't commercial shooter levels be this good? On the other hand I'm glad that the art of level design is not yet dead.

Arcane Dimensions (only played 1.7) completely blew me away. I know it's using a modified engine, but goddamn do they put it to good use.

Some Arcane Dimensions contributors are working on a commercial FPS ATM.

    edit:

Tried this but it currently runs on Dark Places which doesn't feel and look like I want my Quake to feel and look so I only played the first episode.

There are some neat new features: new and reworked enemies, new weapon models, more destructibility, full player model (you can see your feet when you look down), new sound effects,...
And some not so neat: a slow-mo effect in Quake, wut?! And the horrible Dark Places visuals. This is sometimes almost Battlefield 3 level of eye torture.

Some are calling this Brutal Quake but this is not nearly as over the top as that mod and I hope it stays that way.

I read that a Quakespasm version is in the works and it can't be too hard to tweak out the more annoying features. This has the potential to become something great.

Astral Rag Interesting. What do you find so bad about the Darkplaces engine? I quite enjoy it, lightning effects are pretty neat (not default ones though).

Someone just released a Quake 1 singleplayer polish mod called Copper and it sounds pretty good from the changes. It aims to improve what exists instead of adding new shit on top:

The site also holds a download link for a custom map pack designed around the mod. I'm about to give it a shot.
