Forsaken Gods was awfully buggy, but the idea behind it was not that bad. I liked seeing the hero transitions progressively into a more and more irritated asshole as the game goes on.

And the ending with him crowned as king was even more weirder
. I like strange stuff. Forsaken Gods is Gothic 3 turned strange.

Arcania is Fable without what little Fable does well.

I tried to play Gothic 4 and just treat it as a normal/generic ARPG but even then I couldn't get past more than a third of the game. It's like it was written by a child.

I admire your courage and patience. I uninstalled game after visiting first village and doing some quests around it...

You've seen the crux of the gameplay then -- it literally doesn't improve: all just a bunch of generic mmo quests.

I can live with dumbification to a degree. I can especially deal with it if the atmosphere is good. Shit, I loved Fable and it stunk, but the Elfman-y music and the Trina Schart Hyman-y art roped me in. I'll probably get it for the 360, as when there's an option I always go console. That backfired like a motherfucker with DA:O as you couldn't give your guys movement orders, which made combat absolute shit. They fixed it for DA2, but DA2 had all sorts of other issues. Risen 1, on the other hand, had absolutely sublime controls with that delightful 360 handsex controller, so you win some, you lose some. That's the one thing Risen had in spades over Gothic, the combat controls with the 360. I'm a little upset that they dropped the ancient Byzantium thing for pirates, but I hope it'll be a wash because Monkey Island.

Yeah, after 2 your desire for 3 to be good overrides all logic and reason. I still get the urge to go back and give it one more chance. I ain't uninstalling shit though; I got my guy to level 40 or so and I'll be merrily fucked if I'm going to go through that shitty slog again.

Gothic 4 is a masterpiece on par with the likes of the Princess Bride and Monty Python.

You are referring to HumanForce's QuestPack, correct? It adds some new characters and quests as well.

I tried it (when the first English version of the mod was released) and it felt amateurish. The English was broken, and sometimes the German "bled through". And I only played for like an hour or something.

It may have been updated since, but I've lost all will to try to play Gothic 3 again. And I'm not touching Forsaken Gods with a 10' pole.

Don't remember the name, but yes that is likely to be the one. To bad if it's poor quality, but might just give it a try if I decide to replay the game. To bad there isn't a standalone mod with just the whole chest overhaul, that all I really want any way and would go a long way to improve the experience.

Question: Is Forsaken Gods' scenario standalone or does it tie into G3? Is it like Gothic 2 and NotR or BG 1+TotSC, or more like BG 2 and Throne of Bhaal?

The game itself is standalone. The plot occurs between the end of Gothic 3 and Arcania.

Why did The Nameless Hero become a dick in Forsaken Gods? Did he finally get tired of people pushing him around? I thought it was kinda lame that they turned him into an antagonist in Arcania, but I never finished the game to see what the deal was. Good lord that game was awful, and I tried to approached it from the same angle as Metro: treating it as an average Action RPG. It was still crap.

He was apparently possessed or something and that's what made him a fuckwit. I thought the whole idea of him turning bad was pretty good in itself and helped explain his attitude in Forsaken Gods(this was actually a neat way of trying to explain the shitty change introduced by the Wyrmlord developers) but the reasoning and limited nature of it and the whole shitty JRPG trope of 'gang of loyal old friends confront the errant hero and help him see the light' was just as fucked as the rest of the game.

If there ever is another Gothic game it's not like Forsaken Gods or Arcania will be canon anyway. Just let them fade into history forgotten.

That wouldn't make much sense, Adanos wanted humans, and Orc to not be govern by Gods, but what would be the point if the world would get taken over by Titans without them.

The interaction of the gods seemed a bit ... limited to me, at least in G2. Beliar even helps the hero on a few occasions -- as if the gods just react to certain set pieces that meet certain requirements, regardless if they help that god or not. Think of the gods in a greek sense where they're not truly omnipotent, and there exist beings outside of their power/understanding.

The titans may be a thing that humans must overcome to become masters of the world, in competition to not only orcs but the lizard people as well.

That is... assuming Risen didn't just take inspiration from G3's ending and is actually a sequel -- I believe it was just a reference.

It's very likely PB will keep two series running seperately - Risen and Gothic - so Risen is not a sequel to G3 but just has some nods toward it.

I think legally they have to develop Risen 3. And perhaps afterwards they will return to G4.

But the chances to see something from them are shrinking ... too many bad news lately.

There is no 'point.' It's just what happened when the gods were banished. The Titans came back and starting wrecking shit. As far as the future of PB and developing games... I think it is bleak so most of this discussion is academic. No idea if they are bound to make a Risen 3 (although it wouldn't surprise me). Question is: was it profitable enough for Deep Silver to be interested? Especially now when they have other stuff to fund like the Saints Row franchise.

The only meaningful way they could return to the Gothic universe is to use the Risen storyline (which obviously flows from the 'canon' ending of G3)... but all of that is probably the IP of Deep Silver. So... without it where do they take Gothic? Nowhere interesting. G3 wrapped up everything and delivered such a massive portion of the game world that they would just have to invent shit totally unrelated that could be any random franchise.

According to their website they're working on something (odds are it is Risen 3):

I think I'd prefer either a fixed Risen 3 or a completely new setting. I'm content to leave Gothic with G3 -- they can just as easily make other interesting settings using, hopefully, what they learned from the mistakes in G3 and R2. Risen 1 was such a promising game and the idea of further improvement... hopes, like a beautiful doll -- dashed across the jagged rocks of decline.

A new setting would be nice. Preferably something that isn't trying to re-create Gothic 2. They seem to be hellbent on doing that after the fiasco with Gothic 3. I love harbor towns, but do we need to be in one in each game? Especially since they seem to be capable at doing other interesting settings. Gothic 1 being one of the best RPG settings ever. Nothing like struggling to evade being someones prison bitch in a all-male environment.

Risen 3 would be fine... if I had any confidence it will be better than Risen 2.
