Nobody on this board seems to have mentioned this, but Gothic Universe has been out for about a month now. For the many of you who have yet to experience any of the Gothic games, this has Gothic I, Gothic II GOLD, and Gothic III all for $30.

Sounds great, the only of them I've played was G2, without the expansion, and seeing as this has the whole collection... would be well worth buying.

I've played all three of them although I didn't spend more than 10 hours playing gothic 3. I'll play it again when I get a new graphics card.

The Gothic series are some of the best rpgs released in recent years. A collection with all three games and the expansion of the second at $30 is a great opportunity for those who still haven't played them. The price is very nice ($30 dollars is about 27 euros if I'm not mistaken) especially considering the fact that Gothic 3 is a pretty recent game.

Imo the best in the series is Gothic 1. The premise of being trapped in a valley that is actually a giant prison is much more original than the world of Gothic 2. Plus you get to become a Necromancer if you wish! (In Gothic 2 you can only be a fire mage). The controlls are a little hard to learn but if you get used to them you'll want to play Gothic 2 using Gothic 1 controlls too (they added a different controll mode for those new at the Gothic series).

Gothic 2 is a great game too and Gothic II GOLD includes the expansion that adds a whole new area, more depth and makes the game much harder than the original. That is a good thing since although Gothic 2 may give you a hard time at the begining, it becomes pretty easy as you go along (although if you decide to kill all the orcs that lay siege to the castle in the valley, it's not so easy to actually do it).

As for Gothic 3, there is a recent codex review that claims that it's the best of the three. I didn't play it enough to know if this is true but it is certainly high praise. Go read the review if you need more info.

They sell all those games for 30$ total while Gothic 3 alone still costs ~40$ in Germany?

Nice find, shame it is US only though. I live in the UK and although I have Gothic 2 Gold and Gothic 3, I am unable to find Gothic 1 at a sensible price.

I haven't played Gothic 1. I liked Gothic 2 a fair bit, it was fun enough to play, but the combat system started to really bug me after a while. I played the Gothic 3 demo and didn't bother to investigate further, I hated the combat. Clickity clickity Diablo style.

I'll add to the wailing on the combat, it was dreadful. Either random death by wildlife followed by 3 minute reload or taking out whole armies of orcs by clicking one button very fast - they fight you one at a time even when you are totally surrounded. Add to that a badly optimized and buggy engine and I just couldn't be asked to play much longer than the first village.

Fuck you. You're probably some retard who likes linear stories with hawt action and can't quite comprehend a game that isn't divided into chapters. Go play fucking Final Fantasies and leave western RPGs alone.

Don't think the combat has been changed any, although the AI of some of the monsters have. At any rate, the game's pretty neat if playing a magician( at least once you get the Demon and/or Mana Regeneration ). Except for the melee-combat and the now-patched bugs( fan-patch ), the game is pretty decent. In some aeras it even gets close to the original Gothic's atmosphere, which I'd say is quite a feat.

I don't know what price you are finding it for, but Gothic 1 is (imo) worth hunting down and paying over the odds for.

I agree with pug987 that it is the best game in the series.

Controls are a little odd, but the gameworld of Gothic 1 is the best realised and most original of all the Gothics. When I bought it (just a random pick-up at the time) it really was a revelation for me as to what could be done with a dark fantasy setting.

I know all the Gothic's have been more gritty and realistic than typical fantasy fare, but I think this one really outshines them all. The prison setting really works and feels more alive and real than later games for me.

Plus I love the fact that you start the game as a total weakling and really feel like you need a factions support just to survive...problem is you none of them are "good" so you really need to make a lesser of two evils choice. The ambiguity starts there, but it doesn't end there.

I could go on and considering I played the game many years ago that is really saying something...my advice is beg, steal or borrow and get it.

    Matt7895,

Gothic 1 is listed as available at GB 14.99 new and GB 9.99 used at Play.com and GBP 25.00 and up on Amazon (other retailers are probably avaible). No mention (that I can find) of Gothic Universe on any UK sites.

Ah yes, I forgot about the Playtrade thing. I'm wondering whether to buy it used, or new for an extra £5.

I only bought the Level issue with Gothic 2, but fuck it! It didn't work! The same happend with Arx Fatalis and Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord, only 2 Level games actualy got installed properly, not like I care, because I can get most of those games in 2 hours on ODC. But I was realy pissed about Beyond Overlord, because that one was a tough cookie to find.

Also on a serious note, I actualy enjoyed all 3 Gothic games equaly, they each had their different charms and weakness and ended up being 3 rather different games, but which felt similar enough to them a series (G1 with the atmosphere, G2 with the gameplay and G3 with the non-linearity).
