Gamerz-Edge has laid down the gauntlet and thumped around Hammer & Sickle in their review of the title. They scored it at 5.6/10 and admitted they dress in their mom's clothing when she's not home. Anyway, here's a clip:

Hammer and Sickle plays a lot like Fallout by Interplay, which was immensely popular… 10 years ago. The visual style of the game, game play, and weapons system felt like a direct rip-off of Fallout and Fallout 2.

The problem that CDV runs into with this title is that pretty much everything about this game feels dated. Not dated as in a fun retro feeling modern game that reminds you of days of yore, but dated in the sense that it would have blended in very well with other turn based role playing games back in 1997.

All one of them?

You know, I found Doom 3 played a lot like Doom, which was released 10 years earlier. Oh wait! Sorry, the problem was that it didn't. Well, at least the 1st person view, 3d engine and the weapons were all definitely dated. I mean, 4d games are totally the wave of the future.

The real problem CDV ran into are idiots who write reviews for gaming sites.

Maybe we are dated? maximum pc gave half-life 2 an 11..... and had 6 pages of gushing about graphics and hdr lighting , bumpmapping etc. out of about 8 pages total.Maybe gameplay is a thing of the past, and those games that have good gameplay are doomed before they start?

I don't know what you all are bitching about. He actually gave it a good review, if you read it.
More likely than not, reviewers are obligated to down score this game as the company that produces it is a little russian company, not a Beth or EA. As such, there are no repercussions to American gaming rags if they use games like HS to fill their low score quotas for the month. After all, they can't give every game a 9.8/10, can they?

Those are a few nice quotes, but then you look at the score, what I originally posted, and the conclusion:

    • Overall Comment

Some great works come before their time and are overlooked. Then… some mediocre works come 10 years late and risk the same. Hammer and Sickle is a fun game, with lots to do… but graphically most gamers expect more than Hammer and Sickle delivers. With a number of glitches, and sub-standard sound I wouldn’t recommend this title unless you are an avid fan of the turn-based RPG genre.

It's hard to make the claim that's a good review. Only if you're an avid fan of turn based isn't a ringing endorsement considering it's a narrowing subset of turn based gamers, the avid ones, who are the only ones the reviewer says might like this game.

And this is somehow justification? Because it's not EA, let's lower the score? Well, gee! I thought games were supposed to be scored on their merits, not who made them.

Hey, I like Half-Life 2! I also thought the graphics of H&S were ok. Nothing to fawn over, but they did the job. I don't expect more, but then I am a certified weirdo.

Yeah, because H&S is soooooo post-apocalyptic retro 50's. I could understand comparing it to SS, but comparing it's visual style and weaponry to Fallout is just silly.

The only place where this game should be compared to with Fallout is in quality, heh.

Honestly, how could the graphics get better?

I could not get into H&S, likely in part because I chose a character with 2 intelligence which I think crippled my ability to do 80% of the stuff, but the graphics are fucking great. The death scenes are baetter than fuckass halflife or doom 3 garbage.

There is more to graphics than tech demoing out bumpmapping and garbage like that.

So he recommends it to you guys, right? I mean SHOULD he recommend it to graphics whores and FPS fans? That would hardly be fair. So I think the review is actually fine - excpt for the rating. The conlcusion he draws is that it's a great game for fans of turn based RPG games - and a game should be rated on what it is trying to achieve. Since I suppose that it's pretty obvious that that is exactly what the game set out to do, he should have given it a better rating.

Well, in their Space Hack review they admit it isnt the most deep game ever and then the highest score the game recieves at the end is in Depth (9.2/10).

    They are just fucking stupid.

It seems like damn near any reviews these days have scores that don't seem to match up with the actual review. Sometimes it's the editor fudging the score, but i don't what the hell is going on the rest of the time.

    Agreed.

    Also:
Is there some reason why he's talking about graphics and sound in the Fun Factor/Depth section? We're all aware that the whole idea of having sections is pretty stupid (I'd love to see some movie reviews split up into sections and then given a random rating at the end). Do you really have to mention graphics and sound in section that has nothing to do with graphics or sound? He's not even following his own shitty system! I suppose the sentence was supposed to be some sort of segue; good job.
