Doom 3 was a dumbed down System Shock 2.

But unlike BioShock, D3 was good game.

If you like Episode 1 better than Episode 2 kill yourself.

I remeber I was surprised by quake 4. It wasn't half bad. It had great weapons, great enemies, a challenging gameplay (at the harder skill settings enemies could kill you in a few hit... and it was balanced by your speed and the power of your arsenal) some great setpieces and scripted sequences (like that dropship assault sequence, or the stroggificiation part).

It still had some bad (the game was long, but lost its charm near the last level; some shitty vehicle sequences). Much better than fear and it's one kind of enemy and level and biocock (but that doesn't mean much in my opinion, those two were realy mediocre and overrated)

Can you buy EP 1 and 2 combined at a discount without also paying for HL2 or some other crap?

Hmmm... what if I think that Doom didn't age well, but DN3D did so very well?

Agreed. I still remember the stroggfication and dropship assault scenes. Memorable sequences.

I liked it - the art direction was cool. The stroggification was a bit over the top though. Painkillers were better.

The quakes have always appealed to me for some reason (especially the first one with the dark Lovecraftian flavor, and the tons of user made levels).

The first one was quite awesome, atmosphere-wise, but the second one, while undoubtedly a very good FPS, wasn't all that hot IMO.

The next two FPS games that blew me away were Unreal and HL, Q2 was enjoyable, but failed to do that.

    It is.

    -edit-
though its nothing spectacular or legendary.
All in all decent FPS with some good moments and not a lot of stupidity.

But it feels like best FPS in the universe if you play it after Doom3.

But then I went back to play battle out of hell, and preferred it.

Quake 4 was pretty damn bad. Didn't even finish it.

well, I never liked painkiller. That's because it consisted almost entirely on "boxes" (you know, you enter an area, the entrance and exits are blocked, and you have to fight hundreds upon hundreds of the same, weak, non-dangerous enemy).

The older id games had a much better and varied gameplay where you fought a large number of opponents. Maybe it was the variation between the enemies, the quality of the level design

I love the first quake. Loved the settings, loved the enemies, loved the level design (except for maybe chapter four) and loved the gameplay

Regarding quake 4: is not spectacular, but much better than the standard fps crap that is released those days

Painkiller has many more enemies though, most have their own fighting style (compare the ninjas, sados, executionners, ww2 soldiers and skeletons for exemple) and you do not find them in every levels, some are even found in only one or two levels.

PK's level design is overal simpler than Quake's, that's true, though some, like the opera house, can be very impressive. On the other hand PK offers more variation with some very different settings.

ALso, I REALLY liked the weapon selections / combos in Painlikker. A few fun ones not duplicated anywhere else. Other stuff like soul grabbing, tarot cards, unlocking levels at higher diffculty levels, super hard jumping puzzles, jiggling corpses for coins, super atmosphere / sound, great art design with lots of variety level to level, etc...

Painkiller is really, really fun. And I agree, the variety and atmosphere are great. It wouldn't be nearly as fun without them. Unlocking levels is annoying though, and jumping puzzles are a tiresome waste of time. In the end I ignored the tarot cards.

Since we're talking about good FPS, I'm currently playing Undying and the game is just awesome. It has superb atmosphere and a very well implemented weapon&magic system. I can't believe the game sold so poorly.
