I'm not completely new to cRPGs, I've played a lot of them, but more commonly the "fancier" ones like Arcanum and Fallout than hardcore DOS RPGs. The character creation in these games make the complexity of Arcanum's character creation look like a joke. Sadly enough, I can't seem to understand jackshit of what's going on with their character creation screen, where there's stuff like "climbing", "swimming" and other stuff, so I'm kinda clueless as to what ot put points into. Also, whenever I start playing, every time I even move one centimetre, a wall of text just suddenly appears. Now reading walls of text isn't a bad thing, but honestly I feel like I'm reading a book, not playing a game. So, I'd be very grateful if some of you pros could fill me in on the details and give me some good first-time advice. Also, what's a good DOS RPG to get started with? I've already played Betrayal at Krondor(or am in the progress of playing to be exact), so that's not an option. So, tell me your opinions guys!

    Incoming KKKs detected.

Just read the sticky thread, dammit.

I personally recommend Pool of Radiance and, if you like it, other GoldBoxes.

I did read the sticky, but most of it are games which I've played already. Also, the mod who changed the name of this thread is an asshole by the way. I was only asking for some help.

BaK is already as userfriendly and modern interfacewise as it can get with with dos. Tell us what you already played and what you don't like about it.
Try Ultima 5+6+7, Starflight (Amiga version or Genesis version) or Amberstar/Ambermoon (Amiga). And Dungeon Master is more gaming than reading. If this doesn't help you just don't like rpgs really much.

What about reading the fucking manuals first? Goddamnit...

I would recommend Ultima V if you want a simple yet challenging game, or M&M3... Then you can continue with classics like Darklands or Realms of Arkania :obviously:

It's not that I hate reading, it's that 50% of the time, I don't know what's supposed to be going on. Give me any of the "more modern" RPGs like Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Arcanum etc. and I'll have no problem at all, but with DOS games it gets complicated for me. By the way, BaK is an exception, I'm playing it right now and I'm enjoying the hell out of it, but the other games like Wizardry and whatnot where I need to develop my characters bit by bit are the games where I start to find problems.

This is like asking generally about cooking and then specifically which spices to use.
If we don't know what you are trying to cook, we can't help you.

There are a lot of threads/walkthroughs and other helpful resources available on most older rpgs, especially the more popular ones.
You usually find advice on character creation and useful skills as well there.

Just use the search function (or Google).

RPG Codex - the only place where being called "LARPer" is a bigger insult than being called a "cunt" or a "nigger"...

Try the games I recommended (except DM). They are oldschool "storyfag" games without much char development. Starflight is a bit more open but usually you will always have a red line you can follow. But reading the manuals is always mandatory. Amberstar (available for pc) requires you wandering in whole Twinlake and speak with everybody you see (there aren't that many) till you know what to do first.
No "oldschool" rpgs but I mention them because they could fit your taste:
For Ultima the dungeon siege remakes would be another alternative if you want it more like BG etc. And in this style there is Siege of Avalon, too. Can't say that much about it because i'm only in the beginning. In general Diablo combat with lots of BG dialogue. Just make sure to get the latest unofficial patch. The higher resolution alone makes it worthwhile. And there's Inquisitor on gog which I haven't played but seems similar and looks promising. And if you want a shorter game where you can't get lost try Frayed Knights.

Although, what games have you already tried?

I'll never understand threads like these. Every game in existence has a manual, extensive FAQs, and walkthroughs available by doing a search on Google.

Baldur's Gate series, Fallout series(up to 3), Arcanum. I've played more RPGs, but these are the ones which I know inside out and completely finished. Also, Wizardry 8 looks awesome in my opinion! I've seen some gameplay of the game and I'm getting it soon. So I think something along the lines of these RPGs and/or Wizardry 8 might be a good idea.

Threads like these exist to provide healthy doses laughter and mockery. Also, they can easily be derailed to a "plane tickets, biatch !" argument, for even more amusement.

Try reading the beginning of a walkthrough for a game you want to try, specifically the character creation part to get an idea of what skills/attributes are and are not useless in the game.

Try the Realms of Arkania games. You can get 1+2 on GoG for like $6. That's a good example of a game with lots of stats and skills, but with not all of them being useful so it can be a bit scary at first until you realize which ones you need. Again, check a walkthrough.

Try Wiz 6 and 7 first. Excellent games if you are more of a combatfag than a storyfag. And you can take a party all the way from Wiz 6 (1990) to Wiz 8 (2001). Which other games can match this continuity?

As for what you should be doing, well.....you should be taking the manuals for these games into the bathroom wit you when you take a dump and digest them completely so you understand how to make the blops bleep. While you're playing you need to take notes, read alot and use your imagination.

"Hey, I need help with this new rpg"

Codex: "fuck you! Go back to your popamole!"

"Hey, I need help with this old rpg"

Codex: "fuck you! Go back to your popamole!"

And this is how rpg fans drove themselves to extinction, class.

Seems to me that he just wants to play some older games and have a gay old time, but is intimidated by their presentation.

Try Wizardry 4. Not only is it the easiest and most newb friendly Wizardry game but it's also quite possibly the best one of the lot.
