The Bovine Conspiracy reviewed Harpoon 3: Advanced Naval Warfare this past weekend and gave it their seal of approval with a score of 8/10. They had a lot of love for the varied scenarios and solid AI.

Not only are the scenarios well done, I was impressed by the AI as well. The enemy bombers did a great job dodging my fighters while their submarines kept quiet and stalked my surface fleets. Special mention needs to go to the friendly AI which assists you in commanding your forces. There was a report of an unknown submarine lurking in the waters ahead of my carrier task force. I launched an ASW helicopter to check things out. All I have to do is click on the “air ops” button, then click on the unknown submarine contact. The AI will take care of the rest. I watched as the helicopter flew to the area of the contact, dropped Sonarbuoys, identified the contact as an enemy sub, and then launched torpedoes that destroyed the sub. All of this was done without any further input from me. The same is true with air, sub, and surface missions which are easily created in the game. This just shows how the player is able to micromanage as much or as little as he wants.

The retro graphics and confusing interface weren't as appealing, though.

Of course the game does have some negatives. When playing the game you get the feeling that this is a continuation of a game engine created in 1994, and that's because it is. The graphics are as Spartan as it gets, though this isn’t necessarily a bad thing since you are looking at the similar screen to what a real naval commander would experience, right down to the NTDS icons. Still, something should have been done to make the game more user friendly. The sound is just nothing to write home about, and the game plays laughably poor quality 1990s video to represent missile and aircraft launches. What is really bad however, is the user interface. Not much has been made to improve this, and once you get into the heat of battle you will find yourself wishing for an easier time commanding your ships. This is only slightly offset by several hotkeys listed in the manual which you will want to learn pronto.

Read: Harpoon 3 ANW Review

Spotted @ The Bovine Conspiracy
