IGN has posted a dev diary featuring some artist guy working on Hellgate London. Here's a bit about third person and melee:

Getting the third-person character in the game was kind of an obsession for me since we started this project. Personally, I like to see the character I'm playing on the screen, and I also knew that melee combat would only really come together with a third-person view. I knew that to sell the idea, it had to be done right, and for this to happen, a lot of pieces had to come together at the same time. The showing at E3 represented a convenient milestone for this, and honestly, it was past due. The whole process of getting this first character up and running was over a year in the making!

I tend to agree. If I can't see my character, I'm not happy.

Yup. I hope that they make it at least possible to use guns while in third person mode. Or maybe, in town areas, have it switch to third person by default. It'd be nice to see what your character's wearing, even if it's only some of the time.

Damn, for some reason this game is getting me pretty hyped up. ;) I just hope that they'll manage to create the feel of the jedi knight games sword fighting. That was for me THE reason to play these games. They do keep listing them as a mayor influence, so I'm pretty hopefull about that. It could be a winner, they seem to have the credentials, the money and the time to create something cool. That are often the key factors in making great games. Lets see what happens.

In the ign article they talk about wading in hacking with your sword while shooting with a gun.

I might be an idiot, but I enjoy the first-person immersion factor. As long as they have both, I'll be giddy. The more the merrier.

Dual perspectives has always sucked. And the only game that done 3rd person good was maximus payne.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto was an excellent third person shooter.

Besides Max Payne 1 and 2, I absolutely loved Giants and MDK2. Giants was way too short, though. Planet Moon's other game that they released last year was pretty good, too. Not as good as Giants though.

Armed and Dangerous was Planet's Moon latest game. It was quite possibly the funniest thing I've ever played. IF they just sold all the cinematics on DVD, they would've made a fuckiing killing.

Come to mention it, Heretic 2 was a pretty fun game as well. Oni was fun, but too short. Excellent combat, however.

Oni at least showed that it was possible to have a combo beat 'em up on the PC using a mouse. Much better than using a keyboard. Didn't do too well though.

Severance was a good game if you like melee combat.

Yeah, it had nice controls and best narrative of Hexen/Heretic series. Heck, the rest had just plain text. Not as classic as the good ol' Heretic or Hexen, but still overall much better than Hexen 2.
Thief3:DS was also dual perspective and it wasn't bad at all.
