WorthPlaying has a preview of Hellgate London, talking about various things they've seen from an early, early build of the game. Here's a little bit on dress up:

Each weapon in the game, whether it's ranged or melee, is "socketed" and can be customized inserting certain mod packs. We didn't get to see much of this displayed in the demo, but some effects of mods, ranging from added damage to wider damage cones, were described for us. One cool effect we did get to see what was how you could see how mods changed the appearance of a weapon in-game. Similarly, in classic Diablo style every piece of armor you acquire alters your character's appearance. The variety of looks in the final build should be positively dazzling, as the demo showed off at least eight different parts of the body that had unique armor bits for them.

Are they talking about flashy particle effects on the weapon or actual change of detail of the weapon?

Sounds like they mean the actual weapon...which is cool.

I'd be slightly skeptical of anything more than "ruby = fire damage = fire particle effects," but I couldn't really give a rat's about minor visual changes as long as the fire damage has advantages and disadvantages in gameplay terms.

Weapon dress up sounds heaps of cool, but I have to agree. I'm thinking fire particle effects myself.

Well Im sure they thought that that was already understood. I mean if you're going to the lengths of changing what the gun looks like, you'd damn sure better change the particle effects.

They did this feature simply for all the people who would complain "waaaaa!! I put a scope on my gun but it doesnt show up!! waaaaahhh!!! that's just dumb!!"

I stand by my original assessment. It said nothing of particles because that was understood.

Fair enough, but it's still just fluff. ;)
