HellgateGuru has an interview with Bill Roper about Hellgate London. Here's a bit on swords.. and guns:

Hellgate Guru: Besides swords and guns, will there be any different types of weapons in the game, or weapons dependent entirely, or exclusively on a class? For instance, in Diablo 2, the Amazon used bows and javelins, while the Assassin used claws. More to the point, will there be any class specific items?

Bill Roper: We will have a few other weapons sneak in, but swords and guns comprise the vast majority of what characters be wielding. Of course, our guns are amazingly varied in the kind of damage they deals and how they deliver it, so we hope players are going to be drooling over the amazing variety of choices they'll have.

We aren't planning on any class-specific weapons, although the skills of each class may push players towards using certain types of weapons. We may have some items that are designed for the different classes, but we are trying to very conscious of not having lots of things drop that players can't use. There's nothing more frustrating than having an incredible piece of armor drop that you CAN'T use instead of choosing not to use it.

Crap. I'm a hammer and flail kind of guy.

I hope they have axes. Or maybe a chainsaw, considering the hack 'n slash nature of the game, it would be awesome to just rev it up and just cut down all the enemies in your path.

There's a cricket bat (shaun of the dead) so I wouldn't rule out the chainsaw (army of darkness).

There needs to be hammers, flails, and heavy flails.

Or maybe some energy-based melee weapons, like lightwhips or something ^_^

I'd like a squirt gun, a weed-whacker, and an eight-pack of soda. I like to hunt the undead old-school.

Probably he confused "swords" with "melee" weapons, and axes, flails, etc are included in the so called "sword" class. :)

I'm not so sure. I've only seen swords so far in the screenshots. I tend to find swords rather boring but hammers and flails are quite cool.

Yeah, but similarly, screenshots have only shown the Templar class so far, but there's supposed to be a bunch of other classes in the game that we know nothing about yet. We shall see.

No, flails are great because they can lash grapple people while smacking them if they get too close. Then you can kick them in the nuts!
