I played it in the 90's but the game is probably from the 80's (graphics are similar to King Quest 1-4).

    What I remember about it:

    - The title screen has vines on it (not sure)
    - Controls on keyboard (not sure)
    - The protagonist is a guy
    - There's a big house close to where you start
    - Most of the environments are plains (not sure, because I only played the demo)
    - You can climb a volcano (walking over lava = death)
    - You can swim in the sea
    - Swimming too much = death (not sure)
    - There's a small island close to the coast

I think one of the Leisure Suit Larry sequels has a volcano but I don't remember much about them.

This would be Larry 2, but everything doesn't add up, if I remember correctly.
So my answer is : I don't know but I'm curious.

It's not Larry 2, as it starts in the suburbs, and Larry himself doesn't swim.

King's Quest 3 might fit, you play a guy that starts next to a big house, and there's a beach on the map, but there's no island to swim to.

Is there a volcano with lava in KQ 3 ? I don't remember so but it's been more than 20 years (argh).
But I remember falling from the road to Mannanan's house. And the yeti mountain. Falling, falling, falling. Drowning. And drying up in the desert.

Faery Tale Adventure comes to mind, though it's an adventure game in name mostly.

    Sort of vines.

    Lava.

You can swim and you can drown (unless you're on a turtle).

Nice guess. Didn't know it was ported to the PC.

    None of them, unfortunately.

But Faery Tale Adventure looks interesting anyway.

The house looked like something from the 19th or 20th century.

No fantasy elements (but I only played the demo).

This might seem too obvious a guess, but what about Black Cauldron?

It's a fantasy game, but has the exact same graphics as early Sierra games; has a house (not modern) at the start; viney type things on the intro screen; swimmable water; lava type stuff later on.

Other obscure old Sierra titles include Mixed-Up Mother Goose, but I strongly doubt that even Sierra would create an adventure game aimed at children that would allow for them to die.
