Heroes of Might & Magic 7

Yeah, the M&M lore is everything but a classical myth inspired fantasy. It's rooted in a completely bonkers melange of B rate fantasy, C rate sci-fi and the all-encompasing who-gives-a-fuck-about-story-just-put-in-robots-wizards-and-cosmic-mysteries 1980s RPG design approach. The only series more pants-on-head insane than M&M is the early Ultimas.

It surprises me how much JVC participates in the promotion of Ubi games, I guess they pay him for doing this things (yeah, it's FUUUUUN, everything related with M&M done by Ubisoft is GREAAAAAT!). Would be really nice if the collaboration went further by giving him money to design a new RPG... not going to happen, of course. He'll keep driving cars and founding shitty mobile/online game companies while Ubi sucks the lasts drops of blood (which could very well be Heroes VII). Sigh.

HoMM's bestiary was all over the place, with cyclopses shooting laser out of their eyes and then throwing stones even though they have only one eye, battling with stock elves and stock dwarves and late-medieval humans with angels, gorgons which turned out to be bulls and devils with pentagrams.
It's fun, don't get me wrong. It's every stock and overused fantasy trope put into a blender. but it's nothing high brow whatsoever, so get that stick out of your ass and off your high horse.
Dominions is myth-inspired. M&M was always camp.

I wonder how the rest of the HOMM games would have looked if that would have been in the game instead of Conflux. It surely looks waaaaaaaaaay more interesting. We'd probably see one of these factions in every game after.

 

Sci-fi elements in HoMM universe greatly predates The Forge. In fact everyone playing HoMM and at the same time disliking merging sci-fi and fantasy is possibly retarded.

 

Yeah use a massive hyperbole for whatever small cameo it made in the two previous title if it ever made one.

 

Entire faction is made out of space locust, it's not a cameo.

 

There's no science fiction faction in the two first titles that they went back and retconned or slipped a lol aliens lorebit somewhere doesn't change this.

 

They were aliens before they appeared in HoMM, they are important part of the lore, nobody slipped in anything. I was right, you are retarded.

I just don't get why are you so fucking butthurt about devs doing absolutely nothing wrong:
1. There is a game series with prominent sci-fi elements
2. They make a strategy spin-off
3. Before the third game is released they explicitly state that the HoMM universe is also sci-fi in the intro to M&M 6
4. They release a third game incorporating sci-fi faction from M&M 6 - demonical Kreegans
5. At this poin only people who don't give two shits about M&M universe don't know that HoMM is a sci-fi universe
6. 3DO introduce a sci-fi faction in an expansion to a game that directly continues the story from previous sci-fi game. At this point people who give a shit about universe can play them, people who don't can just look at pretty animations like they always did.
7. For some reason they are upset about 3DO doing absolutely nothing with the universe they obviously don't care about.

I don't think I've ever encountered a dumber group of people.

 

In retrospective after reading a Wikipedia article this is how it appears to you. HOMM was a fantasy franchise which is also why coincidently enough adding a Science Fiction eyesore was met with harsh criticism.

 

Reading an article, or actually playing some fucking games. It was made with hash criticism from a vocal minority of loud morons who were bitching about nothing. If today devs were as spinless as them we would have tranny option when selecting gender in every RPG out there.

I mean what can I say? They didn't care about the universe and were started by fun addition and yet you defend them because it's somehow right to be an ignorant moron who hates fun. Even if it really was a fantasy universe from the beginning forge would be miles better than that afoul elemental castle.

 

Too bad we never got The Forge considering how ultra boring the Conflux is. It's easily my least favourite faction in HoMM.

And too bad JVC starts the interview talking about making games for cellphones and tablets, at which point I lost interest.

Well I am assuming that minority was made up of HOMM players and not M&M. They are quite different things and for some reason they wanted to keep the HOMM in the all fantasy section.

Though having a tranny option in every RPG would be good.

 

The Heroes players didn't give two shits that M&M universe had sci-fi elements and the majority of the player-base did not know about it and these elements.
As it was stated, putting the "might&magic" in the title was just a marketing stunt.

The first three games (with no sci-fi elements whatsoever) in the series established a strong following and then they suddenly they had the bright idea to insert lasers! Because... lore!? The lore of a series that Heroes nearly had nothing to do with. Moreover, the Heroes series now having a following a thousand times higher who didn't even knew this shit existed.
