Hey everyone, Wow. Much forum. So posting... looks like I should have stopped in here first. I could have gotten a lot more feedback before starting my Kickstarter. But better late than never, right? Here's what I came to say:

photo-1024x768.jpg

You like tactical JRPGs? You like epic scale battles, and not just the under-6-person parties of most games? You like schemes, double-crosses, civil wars, stuff like that (in a fictional setting anyway)? How about ALL THE SOURCE CODE for making your own campaigns in UDK? (Kismet scripting nodes included, no actual programming experience needed.) Then check out Himeko Sutori.

It's a work in progress. And I need some help moving it along.

I'm Nathaniel. I'm one of those crazy lone wolf developers. I do programming, pixel art, level design, material shaders, and now I'm a new expert in marketing. I'd love it if you'd back my project on Kickstarter and vote on Greenlight. Whether or not I make it this go-around, I'm finishing this game. And now that I'm a member at RPG Codex, I think I'll stick around and see what I can learn.

Thanks everyone for running such an awesome forum.

Heya. Welcome to the Codex, leave your sanity at the door.

You need to tell much more about the game if you want to convince people to pledge. The KS page is pretty barebones. What's the story about? Is it linear or not? What kind of world is it set in? Who is the protagonist? The factions? Any cool battle mechanics? What kinds of commands will be available in battle? Details about the character system? What are attributes, skills and power sources? What classes will be there? With what kinds of abilities? I could go on.

Thanks for the questions Niektory. I'll set about answering those. Ghostdog, unfortunately I only had time to draw one set of hair and some female outfit templates. I really wanted to delay the Kickstarter and related video until I was more ready, but other deadlines required kind of a now-or-never (or at least now-or-it's-going-to-be-a-long-time) jump.

Hello Nathaniel, welcome to the codex. This looks like a very interesting title but until you improve the quality of the Waifus I'm afraid your project will not be very successful. I would recommend giving them bigger tits, to start with. If you need any other suggestions, try sending a PM to DarkUnderlord

I'm guessing it's because he's one guy with a rather limited art budget on a piece of vaporware he hasn't actually made yet.

That's what I thought, but it's wrong on at least a few levels. It's like something fed through google translate twice, badly, about 10 years ago.

Himeko means Princess Child. It's also a name. I thought Himeko Sutori sounded like the kind of Engrish name that a Japanese company would come up with when selling a game in America.

I'm seeing "vaporware" used in this forum a lot. Usually I've read that with a negative connotation. I'm not sure how it's used around here.

But yes, I am one guy, doing everything on the project. And I have no budget. I used to have a greater variety of art assets, but then I read the fine print that says "You can't use RPG Maker assets outside RPG Maker." But beyond all that, the game is under constant development, and you can see steady progress on my YouTube page, which I try to update pretty regularly. And the game is playable in its current state. Granted there's not much to it yet, but you can walk around, talk to people, hire soldiers, and get into fights.

I feel like I've seen those sprites before. Are they from one of those RPGmaker sprite generators? Are you planning on any changes to the art or hiring a professional?

Please make a video explaining how the gameplay works first. I don't think you have enough done to get a kickstarter campaign rolling yet, to be honest. If you had gotten the art done first, you'd be rolling in mad dosh by now.

It's a negative word anywhere. As you said in your kickstarter page and here, you don't have much done yet, which makes people very reluctant to invest anything. Ideally, a crowdfunding campaign should begin when there's enough work done to show off what the final game could look like. Even mock-up screenshots of the final product is fine, as long as you disclose that it is. Right now we have absolutely no idea what the final product will look like. Describing what you've done in words isn't good enough because people don't really care about how much work is actually done, they need to have an image of the finished product to get hype over.

Consider hiring an artist to make a few "finished" sprites for you to use in a demo before marketing your game.

Unfortunately, work needed to know my leave plans for the year, and I had to tell them by end of February, which means if I had any hopes for Himeko Sutori, I had to launch a Kickstarter at the beginning of February, and it looks like that was too soon and I'll probably have to try again next year. I have most of the major systems functional (specifically, combat, AI, and exploration mode), but I guess I just need more content to show off. A week into the campaign, I should have reached at least 25% but I'm only at 5%. I guess I'll call this a learning experience. Thanks everyone for your input.

As for where the sprites came from, I got a template called Half Kaizer, which is free to use in any game so long as one credits Showkaizer, the guy who made it. On top of that template, I drew two types of armor (with masks for the team color), two types of boots, one type of hair (that actually consists of behind-the-head, in-front-of-the-head, and bangs) in different colors, and one type of gauntlet. I had started off using RPG Maker sprites, but then I read the fine print saying that's not allowed.

I do like the idea of a large-scale tactical RPG with a realistic plot. Good luck.

I like the way the environment looks, but the sprites just don't seem to work for some reason.

I think they'll look fine when they're not an army of long-haired female clones.

I'm thinking maybe there's too much freedom in camera movement for sprites on top of 3D. Is there a precedent for that besides FFT? Was Disgaea sprites on 3D?

Was a fairly popular style in the PSX era. FFT, Tactics Ogre (ok that was originally on the SNES), Disgaea and it's cousins, Breath of Fire 3 and 4, Azure Dreams (actually I think the mystery dungeon series in general did this) and probably quite a few more I've since forgotten.

I'm not a big fan of the concept myself, would rather just have full 2D work, but you can't exactly be picky about how your game is going to look as a 1 man project.

New composer, sprite artist, and lots going on at HimekoSutori.com

Still making progress and still hoping to relaunch in the coming months! Let me catch you up on what I've been doing since the last update:

First, we have a new website, HimekoSutori.com. You'll see lots of information there, including new screenshots, news, and a development blog.

As for those screenshots, I have a few showing off Himeko Sutori's new partner, Endymion Games, which will be providing most of the sprites. You can see how much work they've done so far:

Armor by Endymion Games. I'm working on a new water material and I'm trying to make the buildings more colorful.

Armor by Endymion games. Also, I've finally added men to the game.
And another big development is that Himeko Sutori has obtained a composer! Kevin Won will be composing an original soundtrack, and all backers at the Digital Deluxe level and above will be getting mp3's.

And last but not least, Himeko Sutori has a newly active Twitter presence. Follow us for the fastest updates on new developments. And as always, you can still find us on Facebook andYouTube.

Thank you everyone for your interest and support. Please share this news with your friends and help make the upcoming Kickstarter relaunch a major success!
