    Thats freakin wierd.
Out of nowhere yesterday, had an itch to play it I reinstalled the game, went to paradox to patch it. Saw the 1.3 and grabbed it. Had no clue that it was released that recently.

Which countries do you play usually? I find it difficult to play for UK, for example, because it's hard to keep track of all the small-scale operations and fleet around the globe.

Well, Im a bit of a patriot. But I do enjoy playing as Germany or Italy also. I tried the U.K. as well, but like you, find a large navy harder to manage than large ground forces.

I havent decided since the reinstall which country to try yet.

Also, I am waiting for C.O.R.E. or Stony road to update to 1.3
You play with either of those?

The UK can be a fun one to play as, you are more vulnerable and pressured than when you are playing as the US. The main thing is to try to sweeten any allies you can get and seal off India from invasion. You can also pass on or trade some of your older navy onto your allies as it doesn't do you a lot of good and costs to maintain, but they might find it useful.

It's great fun trying out different strategies, although I find playing as the minor nations less interesting due to both their limited use and influence on events. The fact they have less events, leaders and tech teams also made them less interesting, though some have been added over time.

Any suggestions for good country choices or unusual game plan ideas?

I agree. Playing a minor nations is not as interesting and fun, but it is an extreme challenge.

I prefer the chaos of a major nation over the slow and steady climb out of the hole as a minor.

It seems as if you actually have a strategy. An idea that I should adopt hehehehe.
I usually play wrecklessly. I guess I am a creature of habit, as I usually spend from '36 to about '41 just researching and building, then going buck wild from there on.

I have never played as the Soviets or Japan though. Both have completely opposite strategy. Queueing them up for my next 2 games.

I always like playing as the Japs. It's a challenging position that can go in many directions (like getting reamed by uncle Joe in 38). You can get stuck in early playing from 1936 onwards too. Taking China quickly is not trivial due to its size. Much better early game than kicking round a few fuzzy wuzzies. A good way to win with Japan is to get a stronghold in south America early on (preferably without the allies declaring war on you), kick the Brits out of India and then sink the pacific fleet. It's then only a matter of time until the rising sun is flying over Washington.

I prefer the sea powers and I agree with Oarfish, Japan is probably the most interesting choice. You get soon into action and are always struggling with a shortage of resources and manpower. The terrain in asia is very difficult so invasions are time consuming. They also get no techs from allies so they have to restrict their research and their IC is quite low compared to the other great powers.

But the Nips can chose their enemys and battlefields. For example after defeating China it's wise to maintain peace with the allies for now and wage war with the russians. In my games the german AI has never beaten Uncle Joe, so you may help them and bind the commies in the east until the bitter peace event triggers.

Playing the USA however is quite boring. It takes forever to get into war, but as soon as the armament runs at full steam nothing can stop them.

Yes, and I liked them but normaly I play only with DAIM. (A little Mod that enhances the AI of the enemys.)

In 1.2 as Germany you quickly overrun France by helping Franco win the civil war and then placing a few panzer and infantry corps in Spain. The AI never seemed to react to this and would continue to build up troops along the Maginot line. Anyone had a chance to try this tactic with the new patch?

Try playing as the USA versus the Unholy Alliance of Soviets and Axis.

Our man baby arm is gonna have to move this over to general strategy gaimg forum pretty soon.

So Japan has no allies at start? Noone to trade/share tech with?

That makes playing them sound even better. More difficult, but better.

Does HOI2: Doomsday have all the features (like elections) that Victoria w Revolutions add-on has? Any major differences between the games? I was planning on starting by buying Victoria and then possibly HOI using the converter to play through to WW3. Anybody tried this?

no it doesn't. The economy is pretty much abstracted away into a few 'resources' that magically grow out of the nowhere. Also, porting games from Victoria to Doomsday might be a huge disappointment. For one, you'll probably already have a huge advantage at the end of Victoria or even conquered the entire world. The endgame of Victoria is highly disbalanced. And second, the converter does a few quirks with the porting. For example, all victory points are distributed to mostly capitals only. So it's likely you can win against a superpower with a single coup de grace taking their capital. Knowing the AI this isn't even hard to do.

Otherwise to the discussion of which country to play: Playing russia is also very boring, because when cleverly managed it becomes way too powerful by the time war begins. And even just holding the Germans off for a year or two will buy russia enough time to outproduce Germany - or anyone else, for that matter. And then Germany will crumble really fast due to the lack of manpower. And once russia possesses all of Asia and Europe, the puny western Allies stand no chance, unfortunately.
