so how would you rate this game compared to other shareware rpg's like avernum and geneforge...

I think so. Prelude to Darkness is worth it alone for the unique combat system, but there's a whole lot more to it than just that. It's basically got two linear paths through the storyline of the game, so you can follow one or the other, and if you botch one, you can switch. There's also some really nice balance all through the game, like the fact you probably won't end the game with lots and lots of money.
