In which fictional universe would you like a game set

How about a game set in the world of Buckaroo Banzai? I was cautiously optimistic when there was news of a TV show a couple years back, and was crushed when it went into development hell due to rights issues. Playing an RPG as Buckaroo himself might not work well since he's supposed to be the world's greatest polymath. It would be like over-leveling your character in Skyrim. But it could work well if your character is a new member of the Hong Kong Cavaliers.

I now need to rewatch it.

Well, first these games would need to be made in a fictional world where developers consistently do a good job of adapting books and movies to games rather than half-hearted cash-ins rushed out the door as a studio's corporate overlords breath down their neck.

Assuming that condition was met, I wouldn't complain if we got a decent Dune RPG or a modern Heavy Metal action RPG.

Paranoia, really? The millennials would be bitching all day that they die constantly. Heck, they do that too with BG.

So, it would be marketed towards old geezers and consequently sell very poorly.

You die a fuck-ton in the Soul's games it didn't hurt sales for them.Dying in Paranoia and being replaced by your clones could be handled in quite an amusing way a lot of players would probably enjoy. There's more old geezers than you might think plus they have the actual money to buy shit :D.

Dying in Paranoia is actually a game mechanic. Autists probably couldn't cope.

The chances of any of these games being made is super remote so just assume everything turns out right.
However if that new Dune movie is a big hit we will probably get a shit Dune game.

Is Dune starred by Jason Momoa?

All in all, you've got the oldie Dune games, if you care to play them.

The new Dune is going to be directed by Denis Villeneuve and I think they want Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Functional socialism

In all seriousness, that would be pretty interesting. Though, the only way to develop a story there, is exploring the limits of such a society and how overconfidence in your own ideals ultimately leads to the opression and downfall of the very people you wanted to uplift in the first place.

But then it wouldn't be fictional anymore... :smug:

Socialismfinder: Plebmaker

Coming from your nearest Swedish, Canadian, German, or UK CRPG development studio soon...

Edit: I didn't say Californian because I still have a sliver of hope for Cainarsky.

undecaf Theldaran Paranoia would make an ideal video game environment ... as Theldaran observed, dying is already an integrated game mechanic. "Fail forward" games are fun, no need for abusive save mechanics. Plus it's a great setting. If anything I'd think the main sales problem would be the casual attitude towards comedy violence.

I thought that the problem lay with sex, not violence. There are plenty of successful violent games.

The Heavy Metal Movie (1981) setting. Would be awesome to be able to explore each setting from the film in one game tied together by something like the green orb.

Almost posted that myself, Shadow of the Torturer was the shit. Such fresh world building and the Torturer would make for such an interesting character class.

Food Chain world! I have already made mod about it for AOW 1 and 3.
There are no horses. One race ride very slow camels or fast dromedaries and another ride giant mice while most of the races fight only at foot.
A faction is ruled by a superintelligent underground telepathic dog.
A faction is ruled by slavers that force slaves to study. It is ruled by a a living airship race (very fat race that fly because full of air) and is allied with the race that ride camels and dromedary and with a slaver race that fight with umbrellas.
A faction is ruled by people that despise reading and just want sports to rule the world. They have a super fast race (on foot faster than mounted troops), the race that ride mice, a race of pirates made of glue that are very skilled in capturing people.
A faction is a republic ruled by a triumvirate with Fievel (the same of American Tail), an hybrid between Tiger Mask and a lizardman, and general Disney that want ducks to secede from this faction because lizardmen, frogmen, mice and slugs votes count more than poor ducks.
A faction is formed by former slavers that de-evolved in cats after drinking too much ice vodka, their breath is so fresh they can freeze the enemies.
A faction is formed by unarmed vegetarians that are usually food for other races but they have great diplomatic and fart powers.

Jugo World! I made some draws and sheets when I was I child. The Earth can't be settled anymore because english invented stinkogen factories. Slovenians discovers a planet that neutralise stinkogen effect. So italians and english invade this planet and they discover other races too are fleeing there.
Italians monarchy rule is very short: a cat rule a revolt against it and become an emperor ruling half of planet. In the italian empire cat are rulers and warriors, dogs do intellectual stuff (even the mentat is a dog) while humans are inferior workers. There are even Harkonnen, Ordos, Atreides and Fremen that live in reserves after their defeat.
English have bigger numbers than italian despite having only less than 1/4 of the planet but they stinks and drinks. They use a lot of genetic factories with strange results. My cousin fake for Anastasia's grand grand nephew and killed queen Elizabeth to take her place. She married Pinolì heir of Pinochet.
United Races have many alien races and it is a republic. They are ruled by a president snake (Biscia Laica - that means Secular Snake but it reminded me Balalaica) and their admiral is the Grimlins so half gremlin and half the same admiral of Duck Tales.
Babau is a double faced race, they seem good guys but then they sing "We are Babau we eat the children". They live on frozen lands and are expert on mimetism.

About existing franchises I think something more about Hokuto no Ken like a proper cRPG or a Mount and Blade version would be great. I know it is just martial arts in Mad Max world, but martial arts in those kind of games is usually just a homage and not the focus and even when well implemented all fighting styles are the same.
A new Birthright? Not sure about it. The set was likeable for me with genocidal elves instead of classic gaylves, still Gorgon's Alliance was such a great game that even a bad setting would be likeable.
