you guys might be missing it a bit

    look at this
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Univers...909&skuId=4272217&st=remote control&cp=1&lp=2

then look at the wii-u. if the wii-u can do that, plus act as a tv guide, AND can play super mario bros / metroid / zelda? fellas, that is huge. If you are single, or even without kids, look--being the guy who turns on the tv, setups the home theater, presses play on the movie, selects the right input, adjusts the volume...there is nothing wrong with that, because 99% of the time when she, or your roommates, want to watch tv, so do you.

But when your 2 year old goes bat shit insane on your post-partum depression wife because Wall-E isn't coming on, because she can't figure out dvd input from cable, and she starts calling for you to go fix that shit because now the baby is up, and all you want to do is shit in peace...the priorities will shift. esp when it all goes quiet and you wonder how much of your family remains.

I am really looking forward to it. Being able to have grandma play movies or nagivate the tv -- man, if it works--i really salute the nintendo engineers who figured it out.

The fact it plays super mario bros and sonic cart are icing on the cake. The one missing ingredient--can it play mp4 drm free movies? If it can do that--woah mama. I have an apple tv (after a wall-e meltdown NEVAH AGAIN) and once you get more then a handful of movies, browsing is kinda shit.

we shall see how it goes...

ha! no. i almost spent an ungodly amount on an glorified ir blaster. but...i..could..not...do..it. if there is a form of htpc, i have tried it, and abandoned it. from $30 tv broadcasters powered by linux www servers to apple tvs powered by mac minis, and everything in between (Roxio/slingbox, etc etc etc).

watch the hw videos nintendo has. the engineers splash it all out there. they know this shit is a grade-a problem: equipment that only one person in the household can use. woudln't it be cool if...

thats what got my interest...yeah they geek out on the hw power consumption but thats ee for you. tbh I am not sure how close they are to the actual design and implementation, sounds like nintendo farmed out a lot (not unusual).

come one now--are you saying you aren't at least a little bit gee-whized by the wireless 2.4 ghz pad / tv outputs? it's like your wii-u is a miniature tv station.

You do know you can get a Logitech Harmony for about 40 bucks that will do exactly what you want, right?

I won't deny they have some higher end harmony's but I have the 100 dollar model (which can be found on sale often for 40-50 bucks) and it handles everything I could need. One button press for each event and it takes care of the rest. It handles powering on/off the devices, changing inputs on multiple devices, volume control based on the activity, etc... Of course, you do need an adapter if you want to use the PS3 (stupid bluetooth). I use it exactly as you describe, making my complex system wife friendly.

He means this, why the fuck would you want your remote to look like some large blocky thing anyway?

If a Super Smash Bros game was released for it, I would buy a thumb-tack based castration vice. Previously I would have said the same thing about a Metroid game, but that didn't work out so well last time.

Not that Brawl was anything to write home about. It was just nothing compared to the disappointment of Metroid Prime 3 and the god awful rape child of Elizabeth Bathory and Satan known as Metroid: Other M.

Metroid Prime 3 was pretty awful, yeah. Never even crossed my mind to buy Other M since I don't like Team Ninja games. I keep hearing Skyward Sword was kind of lame too, but I don't feel like buying a dildo adapter for my Wii mote just so I can play the damn game and find out for myself. In short: The only 3 reasons to buy a Nintendo console are pretty much fucked at this point.

The best games on the Wii were Donkey Kong Country, Murasama: The Demon Blade, and Monster Hunter Tri. I loathe 3D Mario, the last Zelda game was decline, and both Metroids were a crime.

It really is a shame what they did to the Metroid series. I was quite blown away with how they made the transition to first person work so well on Gamecube. That control and aiming scheme made it probably the only FPS on consoles I could stomach to play. Plus they still oozed with atmosphere like their forefathers. Then of course, they turned it all to shit. Just like Castlevania being turned it into God of War. Talk about basically trying to ruin the last few decent series that Nintendo even has to offer over the competition.

You know the really perverse thing?

Other M is the Metroid Sakamoto, the lead director, always wanted to make. It's his vision of Samus, the Samus he always had in mind when he worked on Metroid and Super Metroid. Yeah, sorry fans- Samus isn't some non-stereotypical female that breaks the Japanese mold, nope- she's a whiny, submissive cunt that won't talk back and follows orders, just like Japanese men like it.

Fuck you, Sakamoto. For all the good games Japan has brought us you sometimes can't help but hate them.

Let us just add Mr. Sakamoto to the "developer gone mad" list, along with Molyneux & Garriott, and forget this ever happened.

that's my point--i didn't like any of them so i do without. too many buttons isn't better then multiple remotes, and too expensive means my wife will hate it.

anyways, i'm willing to give wii-u a shot: if it can do the ir-blast, tv guide thing i will be singing its praises from the rafters. watching sports--there are so many channels now, tbs is in one area, fox/cbs in another, espn in another. how can i tell where a given game is being played? if it can tell me what college football games are on, done and done!

if all that sucks and its a $350 super nintendo, then my kids can enjoy it for what it is and you won't hear a peep from me.

i am looking forward to the game pad combo thing though, my youngest has a real hard time and wants to get in on the action. this might be a way for him to play with his older brother.

I highly doubt that this was always the vision for Samus, because the early games were heavily influenced by Alien and as a result of this I suspect that she was an Ellen Ripley clone. More importantly, Sakamoto had ample opportunities to pull this stunt beforehand, and yet all chances for in game characterization were routinely ignored. He was even breathing down the neck of Retro during the creation of Metroid Prime, and yet not a hint of this bullshit was present in the game's cutscenes.

Hell, Sakamoto's baby (Metroid Fusion) portrayed a Samus entirely unlike the one present in Other M. In fact, almost nothing in Other M was consistent with Fusion despite it being a near direct prequel. This retardation has only manifested itself twice, and both times were clear attempts to enlarge Metroid's minuscule Japanese fanbase. One was the Metroid Manga, and the other was was the shit abbreviated MOM. Both were ignored in all markets.

No, this was all a cynical attempt to draw the anime crowd. An attempt which Nintendo will not allow him to repeat due to his failure. I won't be surprised if Metroid: Other M ends up being the Yoshi's Story of this console generation.

EDIT: And yes, it is sad that I have to use what was previously considered the ultimate decline of Metroid as a defence against Other M.

Compared to previous metroids, Fusion was mos def decline. Sure, great game gameplay-wise. But the story was meh + pointless.

The problem with Fusion is that it pioneered the entire, "Sorry, the story wishes you to be in this area of the ship, so I'll just lock every possible exit arbitrarily until you have advanced." It still offered a degree of freedom, after all the sectors themselves weren't very linear, but you had to tackle them in order. This is inherently a giant step down from previous Metroid games--where exploration was the name of the game and the only things stopping you were your upgrades and your skill with tricks. Metroid just put you in the world, gave you no map, and then said ,"Good luck." Metroid 2 did the same thing, but in non-Euclidean monochrome. Super Metroid gave you a map, and brought you back into Euclidean space. Then Metroid Fusion came along and gave you orders, lots and lots of orders. And then it did its best to make sure you couldn't sequence break out of those orders like you can in nearly every other game (except Metroid: Other M, because you obviously can't break a sequence on a straight line path [unless you are playing Metroid 2]).

This is a ghost which has come back to haunt the series ever since. Metroid Prime 3 suffered from very similar problems, and Metroid: Other M is the biggest failure yet in this regard (also true in every other regard). However, unlike those games, Fusion is still a good game based on a time tested formula.

Oh, and I should clarify: the previous edit was very poorly worded. It should read something more like "And yes, it is sad that I have to use what was previously considered to be the game that would ultimately lead to the decline of Metroid [...]" I had several different versions of that message typed out, and I never deleted everything with each new version.

Why I haven't tried out Dolphin earlier will probably be my little secret shame forever...

You guys should really play this apeshit insane gem. It's incredibly motivating.

You can say what you want about nintendo games but they are one of the VERY few companies whos games havent diminished*to much* in quality

I personally dont really enjoy the types of games any more but if you take nostalgia out of the equation they are usually close to their previous quality.

    :e crufty.txt | /wii-u

obviously until santa arrives in the crufty household, no wii-u experience yet, however from what i can tell-

    1) ir blasting is limited apparently
    2) no media playback
    3) day one update boo

two bigtime knocks in my book. maybe 1 & 2 will be addressed in an update. if those don't get fixed wii-u will be just another console.

i am looking forward to 86'ing the 360. it is red-ringing like a mofo so its on its way to the junk heap. also, msft managed to charge a deactivated charge card for another year of xbox live even though it hasn't been online for a year. i will miss the kinnect bar, that light saber duel game is genius imo.
